Are We Heading For Another Recession?
Job growth is dismal. Energy prices are skyrocketing. Inflation is rising. Interest rates are rising. Incomes are down. Consumer spending is in decline. The markets are at their year lows. Uncertainty, not freedom, reigns in Iraq. And growth was pared down to 3.0% from 3.8% in the second quarter of this year. Add these things up, and I see another recession starting in the last quarter of this year.

Any other thoughts?

1. Recession? Sure. At least.
Oil is up about 38% from year ago prices. The budget deficit is out of control. The international trade deficit is likewise. We have expanded military costs, and I wonder when (and if) they'll ever come down.

Add in that the mortgage refinancing boom has largely run its course, especially if Greenspan increases interest rates.

Oh, and about those jobs - the outsourcing of jobs is not only continuing, it is accelerating.

Truly, I hope its only a recession.

3. I agree, and maybe amplify.
This is going to suck. Boomers, your retirement plans are going to have to change. I have a funny feeling that retirement date and life expectancy are going to correlate much more closely than they have in the past.

Twenty years from now, this will be a very tough world. I don't think it matters very much who gets elected president in this next election. If we get Bush, it will accelerate the decline. If we get Kerry, we're still up the suburban cul-de-sac in a cement SUV without a fillup.

The value of an education is eroded by the exportation of our knowledge jobs to other countries. The value of our labor is eroded by allowing an enormous influx of immigration. The value of our investments are eroded by the ability of insiders to loot their companies.

Well, we had it really good for 50 years. It'll be back to 2nd or 3rd world status for the US soon, and I'm really sad that this is probably going to be the case. I'd defy anyone to explain to me how we're going to pull out of this mess with our pants on. Think 20 years, not the next two fiscal quarters.

7. My retirement plans aren't going to change.
I'll still be selling scrap cans or what-not to pay my rent and eating cat food and heating/lighting with a slush lamp full of grease stolen at great personal risk from behind the pub where only wealthy Republicans can afford to eat fat steaks ("Hey! Get outta that grease! That shit's worth MONEY! I'll have the LAW on your old ass!")

That's if I haven't long since said "Fuck this SHIT" and put memory stuff and clothes in the panniers on my bike and pointed the nose South. Should be fun trying to LEAVE this country...

2. IMO, we've been living in "recession" for quite some time now?
When did we supposedly come out of it? What we are headed for, IMO, without some of the HELP that Kerry is offering, is a full-blown DEPRESSION. That's what I've been thinking for at least two years now.

4. No.
A depression, yes, but a recession? Aren't we already in one, and Alan Pondscum is the only reason we don't call it such?

What happens this winter with $100 a Bbl. Crude, and people can't pay their $500 a month heat bills, nor afford to drive to work at $6 a gallon (DON'T say "walk", it's not an option in February around here)

5. "Miserable failure" is too nice
More like "Super double-plus colossal failure". Everything this idiot has touched has turned into a steaming pile of shit. I'm just about ready to make a bumper sticker that reads, "If you vote for Bush you're a complete idiot". Screw the redneck backlash.

6. possible recession
I'm not an economist, & my mother & father were legally married, but we hear that car sales arein great danger of tanking. I've observed a good many of these weak economic periods & I never saw car sales go south unless there was an accompanying recession or one followed soon after.

There just doesn't seem to be anything out there that represents a bottom or a floor or that could jump start things, & my guess is, if Kerry gets in, he's in for real problems.

Understandably, Joe Lunchbox can't grasp that a monster national debt imperils him, but it is showing with creeping inflation etc. & you just can't pull the kind of $$ out of the economy that the dotcom collapse did, (wiped out 401K's, retirement pkgs,) then lay heavy fuel prices on top, and an out-of-control military budget, & not have something give way.

Cheers. :wow:

8. Last I saw about the cars is that
there are 3.5 million of them sitting on lots unsold. The only reason there wasn't a depression in the '80s and now is because of unemployment checks, welfare, and social security checks..the three safety nets against a full depression.

15. Not if the company I work for is any indication
Holy smokes we have been busier than the dickens since the beginning of last year. The company's biggest problem is finding good help that is motivated, show up to work on time, willing to work, and can pass the drug screen. Heck we're making almost $75,000 year as drivers and they have 6 trucks sitting against the fence. I look in last weeks Sunday paper and there were 78 companies advertising for similar positions. I think (more I HOPE) this will continue for a while

employee issue, i agree, where we have a tough time. but our greatest source of frustration is to get these large companies to pay what they owe us. they may be giving us business but they suck at paying their receivables

17. I agree......
Our company does a great job of communicating more than just practices and procedures. They keep us informed on a lot of things. Their customers get backed up in paying as well. We can usually see when that happens because they tighten up the belt at work to hold costs down. As soon as their customers get caught back up then it returns to a little more casual environment
