Wow! Great show tonight!
They had a liberal and conservative economists going at it. The neocon was some creature named Kevin Hassett: he made my skin crawl. They really got into a good discussion of GNP versus the job market. They basically got around to the same point that I did: the two are not really connected all that much anymore!
Also, they had good sized clips of both Bush and Kerry speaking to audiences...AND taking questions. Man, Bush is NO GOOD at answering questions. How the HELL did this guy make it through the 2000 campaign??!
Kerry was on after Bush, did pretty well, although his initial statements sounded fake, contrived. But he really shone when answering questions from the audience.
THEN came Brooks v Oliphant. And they really got down to the same thing: economic growth is not connected to the job market anymore. And this time Brooks slipped a bit when the discussion moved around to possible solutions. As Oliphant correctly pointed out, the arsenal of economic tools has ALREADY been deployed to the maximum extent in the last 3 years. Bushco has shot its load (pardon my vulgarisms!). The attempted manipulations of the economy in the last 3 years are unprecedented. Brooks, when it came to his turn to speak, said that the only ideas out there that have not been tried are from the "extreme" right and "extreme" left.
