What was the most excruciating moment from Bush's appearance today?
I nominate this, from the Q&A:

These people don't like freedom. You know why? Because it clashes with their ideology. We actually misnamed the war on terror, it ought to be the struggle against ideological extremists who do not believe in free societies who happen to use terror as a weapon to try to shake the conscience of the free world. (Laughter.)

No, that's what they do. They use terror to -- and they use it effectively, because we've got good hearts. We're people of conscience, they aren't. They will cut off a person's head like that, and not even care about it. That's why I tell you, you can't talk sense to them. Maybe some think you can, I don't. I don't think you can negotiate with them.

That's nothing but racism, at the Unity conference. Way to go, Chimpy.

Is there another moment from today that is more humiliating to the Chimp than this one? Is "sovereignty means they're sovereign" worse?

The speech transcript is here

A woman from Florida said it to him after the speech.
He asked how things were going in Orlando. There was a small line of people waiting to shake his hand, and there were secret service people everywhere. That's about it.

7. sovereignty
Oh no, it has to be the "sovereignty" moment. There were many moments, many, many fine moments of unparalleled stupidity, but that one takes it because it is a "two-fer." Not only did he not know the meaning of the word "sovereignty," he misunderstood the question. They were asking what sovereignty meant in this situation, since it so obviously isn't the dictionary definition. So he responds with his version of a dictionary definition. Maxwell Smart!

Combine that with the fact that he babbled about Iraq receiving sovereignty during all of May and June, right up until the phony-baloney handover and you now realize the blank damned idiot didn't have a clue as to what he was talking about. Either that or he "forgot!"

42. Everything he says pains me
Whether I agree with a particular statement or not.

Reagan and Clinton were both exciting speakers and were fun to listen to when they were on a roll. GHW Bush was annoying, but GW is absolutely unpleasant to hear. It's not just his mangled syntax (Eisenhower did that sometimes, but still plays pretty well), but that the thought-processes behind the words are transparent. Bush seems very self-absorbed (I'll also mention that Clinton could be guilty of that sometimes too, but not when he was firing on all cylinders).

31. How about this one
we're making a difference here in the public schools of America. In a
recent study of 61 urban school districts, 73 percent of African American 4th
graders narrowed the achievement gap with white students in reading. See,
that's how you -- you know how you know that? Because you measured. Because we
say, show us whether or not a child can read, and, if not, let's correct
problems early, before it's too late.

Now, WTF is he talking about besides trying to discriminate, this AssWipe does not give a f**k about ethnic minority, no wonder there is no more KKK because they are packed full at the White House.

I want to tell you a story about an event that took place in the Oval
Office. Seven men came to see me, from Iraq. They had had their right hands
cut off by Saddam Hussein. You know why? Because his currency had devalued and
he needed a scapegoat. In this case, he needed seven scapegoats. I asked one
of the fellows who came in to see me, he said -- I said, why you? And he said,
well, because he happened to have sold dinars to buy euros, I think he said,
to buy gold so he could manufacture the jewelry that he was making. He made
this transaction on -- evidently on the wrong date, because the dictator
picked him out and said you're one of seven, and I'm cutting off your hand and
burning an "X" in your forehead. And these were the fellows that came to see
me.

Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 11:03 PM by Stephanie

In addition to church groups, various civic organizations were also active, and one of the local rituals for children was the meetings with cookies and milk at the home of a nice old lady who represented the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The cookies were digested more thoroughly than the teachings.

''We were terrible to animals,'' recalled Mr. Throckmorton, laughing. A dip behind the Bush home turned into a small lake after a good rain, and thousands of frogs would come out.

''Everybody would get BB guns and shoot them,'' Mr. Throckmorton said. ''Or we'd put firecrackers in the frogs and throw them and blow them up.''

54. The audience couldn't help giggling when he said "intern camps"
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 11:27 PM by Stephanie
I mean I don't know how they contained themselves as well as they did. But I saw some eye-rolling on "intern camps" - especially because he says it with such arrogance. He's so freaking belligerant all the while he's making a complete ass of himself. THAT's why it's so funny. His sort of defensive swaggering versus the idiocies coming out of his mouth.

64. I was also struck by his constant use of "brow beating" gestures
Like he's trying to bludgeon his listeners over the head with his fanatical ideologies until they agree with him. Yes, utterly arrogant, and a classic bully--the audience was far more polite than he deserved.

72. Did he say "intern camps"? I thought they were shocked that
he said, "we don't need internment camps", as if anyone had suggested the idea. Malkin's ludicrous book tries to argue that WW2 internment camps were good things, but even that idiot isn't saying we need them today.

I didn't realize he'd mangled the phrase "internment camps". Such a glorious fool is the Emperor.

51. The MOST excruciating moment for me was when he came on the stage.
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 06:27 PM by acmavm
Anything after that was putting salt in the wound.

edit: I started to sound like the dumbass myself I'm afraid. Maybe he shouldn't be allowed to be on tv.

70. OK I was watching King of Queens tonight
The main charactor Doug, explains things just like bush. He tried to explain vested interest on this show and he said "it's being vested, vesting, I don't know how to make it any clearer. I went OMG, it's bush!!

71. Gee, it's SO hard to pick one excruciating moment
from an appearance so chock full of excruciating moments! If I had to pick one, it would be the "sovereignity" dodge. Unbelievable, unbearable, incomprehensible. That's W. I love it when the rightwing pundits blather on about how "plain-spoken" W is. He is not plain-spoken, he is inarticulate. And ignorant. And uninformed. And tactless. And intellectually lazy. And embarassing.

76. I've only seen moments of it so far.
Especially the 'sovereignty' part. Had me howling. I taped the whole thing. Gonna sit down tomorrow with a bowl of popcorn and enjoy myself. Shame on me. LOL.
