4. I think pearls are lovely.
But nothing helps those women.

Maybe they use them as a sex toy.

5. Think Jackie Kennedy. She was famous for wearing a single row of
faux pearls. On her they looked elegant. But she could have worn a string of shrunken heads and still looked like class.

That's the one thing these women DO NOT HAVE. Class.

6. Well said.
I have real pearls. They add an elegant look when I am dressed up in something with a very simple neckline.

10. Agree with others -- I think it's the women not the pearls. And don't...
get me started on the fashion sense (or lack thereof) of the Bush women. (Because someone close to me works in the fashion world, I know way too much about this subject!) At the risk of being catty, consider the pantsuit Laura wore to church today. She MUST get longer jackets -- and I think, if she saw footage of herself ascending the steps of Air Force One from below, she would.

15. Carol Mosley Braun wears a beautiful
Black Pearl Necklace ALL the time. I think it's become her "signature" necklace.

Repubs "think" it gives them class and sophistication. They will NEVER have either.

The Stepford Wives were probably ordered by their "master husband" to wear them.

16. These are people without taste. They have been told pearls are
tasteful and so they wear them to try to create an illusion of good taste. Of course, Pickles would wear it with the draperies she calls dresses, but...

18. Pearls symbolize what Republicanism is all about
Stealing the only possession that an oyster has. How much more "conservative" can you get?

22. An interesting question I've always had...
The pearls in the case of Babs are definitely east-coast-prep (which she is) but what has always puzzled me is her public insistence that they are "faux pearls"----pearls are cheap enough. Not for every working Joe or Jane but for these people in the top 1% 500.00 for a basic cultured pearl two-strander, its chickenfeed. For single Condi with her pay I'm not going to bet my paycheck on them being "faux" either.

To me this is pandering to their Target/Walmart/Sears shopping base. "We don't wear high-falutin' jewlery! We're regular folks!"
No one will ever convince me that Barbara Pierce Bush wears fake pearls. Never.

Remember the observation during the Reagan years that the Republicans have two branches: country club and lower-middle-class polyester wearers (can't remember anymore who said this widely repeated line) but the country club set always has worn pearls. Their recruits follow the "style" and get those "faux" ones from the local discount store.

Hey, pearls don't bother me unless they are those hideous big eagles in gold sitting on a single pearl. Uggh.
