Clarence "Slappy " Thomas to be next chief justice?
WASHINGTON - Clarence Thomas (news - web sites) has been interviewed by White House lawyers as a possible choice to be the next chief justice of the United States, says the author of a new biography.

Thomas says he isn't interested but could find it hard to turn down an opportunity to be the first black man to lead the Supreme Court, said biographer Ken Foskett.

"Judging Thomas," out this week from William Morrow, traces Thomas' life from rough beginnings in rural Georgia, through Yale Law School to his life today.

Thomas initially refused Foskett's request for interviews, but later spoke to the author both on and off the record.

Thomas likes NASCAR (news - web sites) and football, plays a fierce game of basketball and during the court's summer recess tours the nation in a 40-foot mobile home decorated with orange flames, Foskett wrote.

3. Wouldn't that piss off Fat Tony?
To promote his "boy" over him.

Needless to say this would be a shameless attempt to get the African American vote.

5. Yes, I hear this this morning! Mr. no opinion Thomas!!!
I've lietened to quite a few SCOUS hearings (every one that was broadcast), and this idiot NEVER asks any questions...just sits there and listens. Sure, I guess he has an opinion, but not his own!

I remember feeling sorry for him when he was being beaten up during the Senate approval hearings. I even strongly questioned why Anita Hill would have followed him to those different jobs if he treated her as badly as she testified.

Since he was named to the SCOUS, he has proven to be a laid back pawn, and not a thinking Justice!

For this nut to be Chief Justice is pure insanity!!!

7. Just more pandering.
From the Bush/Cheney crime family in their never ending effort to hoodwink African-American voters into supporting their regime.

8. Most African Americans found naming Slappy to replace Thurgood Marshall
an abomination.

11. And I agree...
It was an abomination and a disgraceful act. I should have clarified my opinion that this would be more rw pandering but of the same uniquely lame and heavyhanded sort that they are so famous for attempting to perpetrate. Thankfully the African-American community has almost always had the wisdom, foresight and ethical leadership from within to avoid being taken in by such rw schemes.

He has virtually written very little in the way of opinion. He just tags along with Scalia or Rehnquist on their opinions. Literally, he is a non-entity, and as of November, this will be a moot point anyway. :-)
