A contract for America
Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 05:40 PM by BayCityProgressive
I am sure we all remember the GOP's Contract with America..and how horrible it was. Americans ate this bold initiative up no matter how wrong it was, and sent it flying through congress with the Repbulican Revolution. Why cant we Democrats stop our bickering and agree on 5-10 big proposals and release a similar program for america to excite the populace? I fear the GOP is going to do this again this year to bolster their party. Their is talk that they want to abolish the IRS, they will use a ban on Gay Marriage ect...if they are seen as the party with the big ideas going into the eleciton and we are left squabbling as usual, it will be bad news for us. What happened to brave Democrats with bold initiatives like "the new deal" or "the great society". We need somethign to grab the attention of voters.how about a program in support of the equal pay initiative, the union card check bill, ENDA and Hate Crimes legislation for gays,a program for energy independance, Universal healthcare ect I know we have candidates that say these things but it seems a party unified with a program that spells out how we achieve these htings would be beneficial to us.

1. The contract with America failed, only 2 parts of the bill passed.

4. Here is my contribution to the Contract on America...a poem
Contract on America-remember?

This violence must at once be quelled!
(The politician from his podium yelled.)

No leg up! No head start! No affirmative action!
These surely cause their violent reaction!

More Prisons! More Jails! More Judges! More Time!
Less money with which those poor can dine!
So certain am I - the effect of nutrition!
To grow muscle on the non-patrician!
That I will with my own hand!
See their free school lunch be banned!

(A lull in the cheering occurred.)
(And the soft voice of reality was heard.)

But what of the fodder of kith and kin
laced like father Mather’s gin?
With objects d’chem that make them wild
A mother can’t hold back her own child.

Feed Fruit! Feed Vegetables! (Let them eat cake!)
Advertising (cereal) needn’t be progeny’s rake!
Study after study produce not a single conclusion!
ADD’s a bleeding-heart liberal delusion!

And what of the vicious malicious intent
of the entire Saturday ‘toon content?
The wildness left in my child’s eye
makes my surely to be broke heart cry.

That’s not been proven - no studies confirm!
Just turn off the set - ya’ll must be stern!
As long as the “Good Guys” ( WE have defined ) win violent confrontation!
Our own studies find no fault with vicious conflagration!

Working two jobs. You can’t be home?
It’s against the law to leave them alone!

Listen to me folks! I’m free from vise!
I’m rich and I’m right. Take my advise!
Listen to me folks! Become one of us!
They have no money, no power, no impetus!

It’s people like them whining and blaming!
No personal responsibility has them shaming!

Madison Ave’s job is to sell our - er - the product!
Not take responsibility for their child’s misconduct!

The conclusions at which I have arrived!
Are Scientifically based facts “Good Guys” contrived!

Relative truth does not exist!
We know they give it a twist!
They call it nutrition, prevention, reciprocity!
We’ll prove being poor is a punishable felony!

6. If a strong part of the proposal is like "new deal" or "great society",
then great, and I'll do my part to advance it.

But, if it's all for middle class, and we poor folk are supposed to work hard to bring it to fruition, but have no benefit from it, just like most of what's coming from the DEMs now, then to heck with it.

I'm tired of being used to fight the battles for others.

7. One issue
that is a problem for poor and single mothers is child care. They go work 40 hours a week for 5.15 an hour and that all goes to a child care agency. Now personally I advocate a nonprofit system for child care..I know this has no chance of fruition...but at least the Dems could propose ways to help pay for childcare for low income families.

8. The PRIMARY issue right now is HOUSING!
Section 8 is being cut, and no amount of health care, or child care is going to help those who are forced onto the street.

But, hardly anyone wants to even hear about it.

All anyone can talk about now is "working poor", as if Seniors and disabled folks have already ceased to exist.

Prophetic?
