Blockbuster BBC report: F911 gets standing O 's at Fort Bragg
BBC Radio sent a reporter to For Bragg, home of the Airborne Rangers, to cover Lynndie England's trial. Part of the report focused on how surprised the reporter was of the anti-war, anti-chimp sentiments among the soldiers and especially their wives.

Example: An art house theater in Fayetteville thought they were taking a risk by showing F911, but instead sold out every night for many weeks. The theater owner says she's had only two episodes of heckling and many, many standing ovations. In fact, Fayetteville's multiplex saw the success and put it on two screens--it's still playing on one.

The reporter then interviewed an anonymous soldier and a wife who essentially said Iraq is a waste of blood.

Think state-run CNN and MSNBC don't have reporters in Fayetteville?Think they're not hearing the same things as the BBC guy is? Think they're going to report it? Shyeah. Their too busy sanitizing Lynndie England's "abuse"

If you can swing it, get XM--BBC, AAR, C-Span Radio, and the great music will lower your blood pressure 20 points.

2. Get Sirius instead of XM
Music offerings are comparable. However:

Sirius carries the ENTIRE AAR broadcast day (very good)
Sirius has 3 NPR/PRI stations in addition to BBC world service (good)
XM is part owned by ClearChannel (bad)

Just FYI, I have no financial interest in Sirius.

5. Good to know.
I was eventually going to do the whole satellite radio thing, since DC radio is f'ing horrible. I will now steer clear of XM.

15. DC radio is beyond f'ing horrible

I live in noVA (hoping to move soon) - since I got Sirius I haven't listened to WTOP or any of the horrible DC stations in months!

Even though Sirius is based in NYC and XM is based in DC you'll find NO difference in signal strength, clarity of signal, etc. Both use a full complement of repeaters, etc. to get a nice signal to you, and Sirius runs the full complement of AAR as previously noted.

Get Sirius - you won't regret it for a minute!

note: Don't know if you're a sports fan or not, but Sirius also has exclusive rights to broadcast every NFL game, as well as the NBA and NHL (I think).

17. Repeaters? Nope, it's from a SATELLITE. Where the studios are
is irrelevant.

7. Let me just say that DMM says our media is for shit --
as DMM has just experienced one of her few-times-a-year full-blown panic attacks, which she treats with Xanax. Otherwise, she would NEVER curse on this board.

8. This has been reported
Most of the stories about F911 in Fayetteville cite a June 29 article in the Fayetteville Observer (subscription needed).

10. No that I know of
But it has gotten circulated, including in the conservative Wall Street Journal:

By SHAILAGH MURRAY / THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
July 12, 2004

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- John Atkins isn't the sort of person one would expect to find crowding into the Cameo Theatre here to see Michael Moore's " Fahrenheit 9/11."

The 26-year-old U.S. Army machine gunner from Fort Bragg voted for President Bush. A graduate of the University of Colorado-Boulder, he enlisted last year "to serve my country" and expects to go to Iraq later in 2004.

"That was pretty thought-provoking," Spec. Atkins says after a showing of Mr. Moore's documentary. "I guess I'm a little disillusioned. I've got a lot more questions than answers now."

Every day since "Fahrenheit 9/11" opened here more than two weeks ago, military men and women have swarmed to the 125-seat Cameo. "Everyone thinks the military is so staunchly Republican," says Staff Sgt. Brandon Leetch, a military-intelligence specialist who spent time in Afghanistan. "What this shows," he says, looking around the theater before the movie, "is that we're not all the same."

Although a nearby suburban multiplex has started screening "Fahrenheit 9/11 ," too, on two screens -- meaning Fayetteville residents have their pick of 10 shows a day -- most of the tens of thousands of troops living in the area probably won't see the film. But soldiers and their families make up well over half of each audience at the Cameo, cinema owner Nasim Keunzel estimates.

That surprises Peter Feaver, a political scientist and military specialist at Duke University in North Carolina. There is a sense in the military that "the media is stabbing us in the back as they did during Vietnam" and Mr. Moore's film would seem "Exhibit A," he says.

Most viewers are coming from Fort Bragg, just up the road. But often a few Marines from Camp Lejeune, about two hours away, join them. The night Spec. Atkins attended, three soldiers arrived from South Carolina well after the 7:30 show had, as usual, sold out. The ticket seller set up chairs in an aisle.

12. CNN loves to show Ft. Brag soldiers being used as props by Chimp
as backdrops to his speeches. Why won't they report what they're actually thinking?

How about emailing your favorite media whores, asking them if they'll report that America's troops are not only scenery, but people with thought-out opinions.

14. CLEAR CHANNEL OWNS LESS THAN 2% OF XM!!!
Why can't you people get that? They own less than 2%! It's hardly a controlling share, and they're selling off what they've got.

21. I've been trying to tell you
that the military is a diverse group of people. My son is a Marine (home next week from Iraq for 30 days!)AND a liberal. He's not the only one. A soldier (Army) who sat next to me on a flight to Chicago (on leave from Iraq) told me he and his girlfriend were going to see F 9-11 that weekend. He said the buzz was strong among the soldiers. Don't make blanket assumptions about people. We lose too many votes that way with rhetoric that alienates people who are wrongly criticized. Keep an open mind. These soldiers are a plus for our side.

Edited on Mon Aug-09-04 12:28 PM by supernova
come November, and the military vote is why. They are feeling very used and abused. Don't kid yourself that it'll just be us liberal pansies in the Triangle and Asheville that will be voting Kerry/Edwards in November.

North Carolina could go blue this fall for the first time since 1976.

I also wrote the BBC online and asked them to add NC to their battleground states map. So far they haven't done it.

27. Can active Military
legally participate in telephone polling? If not, there is a large number unaccounted for on these bases. I have a drinking buddy at bragg and from what he says there are a lot of people there that are not too pleased with shrub.
