Halt 'blot' of wind farms: Prince Charles
The Prince of Wales believes that wind farms are a "horrendous blot on the landscape" and that their spread must be halted before they irreparably ruin some of Britain's most beautiful countryside.

Prince Charles, who has an abiding interest in environmental issues, has told senior aides that he does not want to have any links with events or groups that promote onshore wind farms.

2. As the article states this goes against his relatively "green"
stance on issues.

I do know that he is an architectural snob...he has made many snide comments about modern architecture so this might be another pet peeve of his...big windmills ruining the view of the countryside.

Personally I think they are really cool...

37. Yes they do....

...there is a wind farm on the Danish shore near Copenhagen...when you are crossing the bridge from Sweden you see them and they are beautiful....it reminds me of ballet.

As far as Prince Charles....waaaay too much inbreeding

Cheers,

we could cover the country in solar panels & wind turbines & still not reach the current level of energy use we get from fossil fuel.

38. Wind farms would require 4% of the land area of the lower 48
Edited on Mon Aug-09-04 04:40 PM by jpak
to provide all current US electrical demand.

This does not include offshore wind farm potential.

Photovoltaic arrays would require less than 0.5% of the land area of the lower 48 to provide all current US electrical demand.

How much to replace all fossil fuel consumption?

I don't think anyone has done that math - but we don't have many options here, do we....

21. Then start talking about population
I love these so-called environmentalists who choose to not talk about the cause of it all. Energy useage doesn't just happen. People make it happen. More people, more energy useage. Unless we stop taking warm showers, and stop cooking and stop driving.

(Would it be such a crime to ask people to not have more than two kids? That way we'd stay at this intolerable level of six billion.)

33. Population; the greatest taboo in politics
NPR had a report on this last year, saying that no politician could talk about ZPG and expect re-election (anywhere on the planet). Those who have many children are still praised in every society, while those who choose not to are considered "selfish". At current consumption rates, we will run out of ALL resources in 50 years (according to the Sierra Club), but population will double in twelve years. So where does that leave us? Will a twenty year old today ever make it to fifty? Or will earth become another Easter island; deforested until the topsoil eroads so much that growing crops is no longer an option, then wars over remaining resources until all that's left is a barren landscape? It's not a very promising future.

I have to strain to keep from going up to people herding 6-7-8-more kids at the store and saying "Hey, have you ever tried TROJANS? You can't even feel them anymore the technology's so improved"

Seriously, why does anyone need 12 kids anymore? to help on the FARM? Shit, man, you haven't fired up the tractor and put a crop in since you got that job at Wabash National 10 years ago, but you're still knocking her up every year...Because GAWD "commands" it? So how "fruitful" is "Fruitful Enough"? Ahh, you can't tell 'em anything...

34. What's the problem with wind farms. Just too many windmills or what?
I mean, they are quieter and safer than nuclear power plants. Cleaner, too. More attractive, too. And self-renewing, which nuclear power plants are not.

So what's the beef? Is it that to produce massive power it requires just way too many windmills? Is that it?

35. HE IS AGAINST ONSHORE windfarms, NOT offshore ones.
And for the REAL reason: his estate has tons of land suitable for windfarm use, so there's a threat they'd be put on HIS duchy.

He says they can and should be put offshore.

Another renewable energy foundation person says that windfarms cannot produce the capacity needed.

So that's it in a nutshell.
