I REALLY don't get the enviro-wackos response to Prozac in drinking water
Edited on Mon Aug-09-04 09:10 PM by homelandpunk
I mean they are all saying "We are concerned about the toxic effect on the the environment blah blah."
Why aren't they saying "WHO THE FUCK PUT PROZAC IN OUR DRINKING WATER!!!!!! WHO?! GODAMMIT, WHO???!!!"
I mean I don't get it! You got Prozac in your water, and your FIRST concern is "environmental effects"?????
How about demanding an answer ASAP from all authorities involved to find out HOW it happened, i.e., WHO the sick fuck IS that DID it?? How about making THAT your FIRST concern?
THEN....worry about your fucking ph and chlorine balance. G-ZOZ!

Rant signed,

4. Uhh, dude...
The "enviro-whackos" are talking about the toxic affects because it's already pretty much well-known that prescription drugs get into the water supply because too many people are taking them. Your body doesn't absorb everything you put in it, and a lot of it can be eliminated through your kidneys (in your urine), if it's water-soluble.

When you have an entire nation popping anti-depressants, it's no wonder the water supply is contaminated. Chill out, the "enviro-whackos" are just trying to draw attention to another negative side affect of our dependence on prescription drugs. Sheesh.

12. I thought it was a brilliant piece of comedy.
See? No? Ok look, I'm going OFF on this issue with Prozac in drinking water, see? And it is obvious it's not some guy with a vial of prozac cackling sinisterly as he pours it into the the water at the water treatment plant.
So I'm getting worked up...see? Like I am in dire need of.... yeah, Prozac!!
Ha ha Ha ha!!
Ok, it sucked. Ya had to be there.

Stuff didn't work. It was a toss-up between Pamelor and Thorazine to get me calmed down and functuional...

It'd been more accurate to go "Prozac in the water? Oh, that's bad. For some reason, I just can't get all excited about it...I'm thirsty, would YOU like a nice big cold glass of tap water?" :7

... and say that the amounts of Prozac that we're talking about here is infinitesimally small, way, way, way, WAY smaller than an amount that would be needed to have any effect on the body whatsoever.

There are enough real problems in the world that I don't need to worry about this stuff.

17. On the limb with ya...
this is where I and the "enviro" crowd part ways. I'm from the old school with renewed ideas, that conservation and SANE enviormental regulations are appropriate...everything else has become a mantra...a fundamentalist religion of a sort... There are sooooooo many things to worry about that are so much more important than what we pee into the sewer.

Some fine mind in water managment will come up with a solution to filter our water better. I'm not worried. On the issue of DRUGS. I say BRING EM ON...........wooooooooooooohooooooooooooooo Ever try to get any pain meds lately? (I mean unless you are OxyRush) Docs don't let very many people have what they really need (even though our tax dollars have helped to do the research and development for the pharmeceuticals). Getting a really great pain med is like pulling molars from a Polar Bear...it ain't going to happen unless you are "connected".

Bush is full of shit. He can't drug the whole population. Besides, we are trying like the dickens to roust his ugly ass outta there. So, with that said, I want to make the case for MORE ANTI-DEPRESSANTS for those that really and truely need them. There are millions of folks out here without medical insurance who can't even get inside the doors to a doctor let alone a therapist for help with their moods or nerves or PTSD or BI -POLAR or anything else. IT'S A CRISIS. Don't know why so many people are struggling but it's just the fact. If you only knew how bad it is, this thread wouldn't exist.

My opinion.

28. With all due respect, I don't buy this intervention idea...something
smells fishy. Bush isn't the guy I think of when one talks about real Healthcare and Real Mental health Therapy/Care. I'm sure Bush IS the "sort" to want to "control" people however, but WE outnumber him. I suspect not a few zillion folks would kick some ass before they let anyone implant some crap like that into their bodies...

I've been screaming at the social workers to DO AN ASSESSMENT of my g.son. I suspected he had a mood disorder or anger issues...I just wanted an assessment..nothing else yet. They wouldn't do it. I'll bet if I was wealthy I could get one. The mental health establishment is getting underfunded and gutted and swept under the carpet (thank you Reagan). I NEED IT. My family needs it. I NEED to be able to talk to someone now and then. ONLY the high and mighty get that luxury--I sure can't afford it. I am NOT against Mental Health Care and the MANY services they used to provide.

Think of the countless children who live in families that beat the crap out of them or sexually molest them or come from drug addicted or rabidly alcoholic families...those kids need an outlet, they need a system that will help them address their psychological needs. Teens and young adults who are bulemic or cut themselves or any number of other maladies...There needs to be ready access to help whether the people are rich or poor, and, btw drop the "stigma" of getting that help.

I'm not talking about hypocondria here. Some people may prefer to chose another avenue (more holistic)to find emotional stability..I say that is great too. Just let us have options.

God, you have no idea how hard it has been for me to get the medicines I need, (recently). I had to throw a hissy fit..somebody was going to listen. It worked. The sqeaky wheel gets the oil. However, the paranoia and underfunding of anything attached to mental health is now going to close the program I use to get the help that has given me such relief. I don't know what I'm going to do.

I'm just NOT into the bashing the drug industry yet. However, I am into bashing them for jacking their cost up and for making life saving and life mending meds unreachable/unattainable for those of us without adequate health coverage. My opinion
Respectfully, SB

39. I tried contacting the person who wrote the article...there was no
email or other for her. (I couldn't even get an "E" through to Intervention either) She is a contributing writer to the site. Her premise is based on what happened in Germany--Eugenics theory... I know that the Bushes are neo-fascist but I don't think we are about to go that far yet. That was my critisim of the piece. I know that Bush would LOVE to control everything but it doesn't mean he can.

No, I didn't see anything relating to Illinois, only Texas. My question for the author of that piece was WHO pays for these "experiments"? I haven't any money or private insurance. I was lucky enough to get any help at all at our county services, recently but that is being cut off soon.. so what are we talking about?

What I read was a "theory" by that author. She was trying to extrapolate a boogie man theory of orwellian proportions right out of Nazi Germany and mixing it with possibly good therapeutic measures for people with mental health issues that are going unaddressed just because it was coming from the Bush admin. Just getting an assessment is a big deal and one I welcome--if done by a professional.

Remember, there are still enough of us to rush them. They can't do anything to our bodies, like in that article, that we don't agree to in terms of drugs--they can't force you to take anything unless you are locked up. But hey, if they are passing out drugs...send them over here. I could use a few for FREE.
With much respect, my opinion SB

11. There are also hormones in some (many? most?) public water supplies
from the hormones in birth control pills being excreted and not filetered out of the water when it's treated. I read about that originally in a medical journal article, but no clue where it was. This mentions the problem (under "Causes"): http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/selfhelp/conditions/testicularcancer/testicularcancer.asp
It's thought by some to be at least part of the reason why men's sperm counts have been steadily declining over the past several decades.

Birth control pills - by adding hormones to the water supply, they are reducing our masculinity, preparing the way for a lesbian feminist socialist take-over.

It won't effect me though - I imbibe only distilled water and purified grain alcohol. Keeps my precious bodily fluids pure.

I'd say more but I gotta run - this airforce base has to be locked down now. Heard those commie russians are invading....

18. nobody "put" them there
some drugs have passed through peoples' bodies, some got dumped when they didn't work, some got dumped when they were past their expiration date. The problem with prozac is that it seems to be pretty resistant to biodegradation, unlike most other drugs and chemicals. This is why people are concerned about it.

The starting dose for Prozac is 20 mg. per day. Consider how much of this rather expensive chemical would have to be put into even a small sized municipal water supply to have an effect on people. Back in the 60s, fantasies about dosing water supllies with LSD were quickly abandoned, and LSD dosages are measured in micrograms, 1/1000 the dose you'd need with Prozac.

I'm alarmed because it seems to be a persistant chemical with unknown environmental effects. Parts per billion in the water supply won't have an effect on human beings.

29. Well it is an issue
Prozac is found in the water supply, hormones from birth control.

I suspect the amounts are not enough to cause concern for humans, but there has been issues raised on what affect if may have on wildlife, mainely aquatic animals. Many of the chemicals we flush down our toilets or spray on our lawns can act as endocrine disruptors.

As for prozac, somehow i don't think it would be good for the planet to have animals soaking up the drug. And i certainly wouldn't want to drink a glassfull of zoloft.

Thats why i am a bottled water fan.

37. This enviro-wacko has an answer for you.
First, the Democratic Party is the party that is concerned more about the environment than the other party. I take it you do not support that part of the platform.

Second, it is the job and primary concern of enviro-wackos to be concerned about.....surprise....the environment.

Third, it is the job and primary concern of different depts. in the government, humanitarian groups, and certain other groups to be concerned about criminal activities of others.

Fourth, your statement is a broad generalization. Are you really sure that ALL enviro-wackos in the entire world have not expressed any curiosity or concern about who put the Prozac in the water? Of course you're not.

Fifth, there is no shortage of people in the world who are concerned about criminal activities. There IS a shortage of people in the world concerned about the environment, animals, nature, and the like. It is critical that enviro-wackos stay on topic and focus on their primary concern, since it is clear that no one else will take up that slack.

Sixth, I'm not convinced any Prozac was found in any water. Is there an objective test result out there? Something that was not done or hired out by the government? I wouldn't believe the government on anything at this point. Just another terror alert thingie.

This topic is about prozac in the water supply, because so many people are taking it.

The first topic is certainly scary, but not many people replied to the thread..... the first thread, or the more recent second thread. I guess it'll have to wait until it either hits the news, or becomes a fait acompli (sp?)
