What's up with Randi and Al on AAR?
On this afternoon's Al Franken Show a caller was giving Al tips on debating right-wingers and then went on to say how he loves Al's show but dislikes Randi because "her show undoes everything Al accomplishes".
Al kind of just muttered half-under his breath with a very tepid "Well, she's very successful at what she does..." and left it like that.

Last week Randi was going on about the lack support she gets from the Air America and then just before cutting away to a break, whispered "Al Franken."

What's going on between them? I have noticed that when Al ends his show, he never does any kind of lead-in for Randi's show. Has there been a fall-out between them?

6. Don't get me wrong.....
I enjoy them both for their different styles. And I agree with you that Randi can get a little grating at times. Her style of dealing with all callers, even those that support her can at best be "confrontational" if the caller absolutely isn't 100 percent in step with her thoughts.

I guess I was expecting a bit more camaraderie between the hosts of the shows, that's all.......

22. That's her schtick.........
her act, her persona on radio. Plus I think growing up at times was difficult and she had to defend herself a lot. Actually, I'm just editorializing now but some things she has said make me think that.

3. I've only been listening for a couple of weeks, but when
Al Franken's show is over I turn it off. I tried listening to Randi Rhodes a few times but I did not find her entertaining at all. *Maybe Franken doesn't like her show and he's voiced his opionion.

*Disclaimer: I know there are a lot of Randi Rhodes fans and I am not trying to insult anyone. This is total speculation on my part, so please do not be offended. ;-)

4. They're all under alot of stress
Randi moved the whole family to NY to do this and there have been stories that the 'financial' side of AAR is a bit flaky. Randi's a real pro, but she's under a microscope.

5. I didn't hear Randi say Al's name under her breath
But I did hear the guy who called Al, and I was so disgusted
at Franken's response, which sort of underscored the adage
"silence is complicity." A classy reply would have been
something like "please don't use my show to trash other
Air America hosts."

I've also heard him scold Janeane on the air.
I'm getting really disgusted with him.
I know AAR wouldn't have happened without him, but he's
just one host of many, and he's not the best host.
Randi has years of experience and it shows.
I sure hope he get his ego under control before he
chases Randi, and her fans, off.

16. I heard Al scold Janeane on the air too.
Edited on Mon Aug-09-04 11:25 PM by Gothic_Sponge
It was at the DNC. Al told Janeane she shouldn't say something about republicans. I forgot exactly what was said, but Al was a guest on her show, and he was telling her what to say?

10. I listened to the program today and didn't hear any dissent.
Randi was raving on about how great Al and Jeannine were last week and what a kick it has been to be involved with the folks at AAR.

I think you are trying to start something or you misinterpreted comments.

I like both Al and Randi, two different styles but both very informative. Actually, any complaints I have today is that Al was too wimpy when he interviewed that pukey, repuke Ben Stein. He let him off the hook and did not even try to show him as the ass he truly is.

15. There was support in my post for both Randi and Al
but I have a problem with how Al let Ben Stein off the hook.

I love AAR and said that I had not heard any dissent today. What is your problem?

11. Everything's fine
I listen to loads of AAR, here's my take on this:

Randi was annoyed, especially when the network started, that Al and Janeane got nearly all of the attention and PR. You'd see news articles about AAR and Randi wouldn't even be mentioned, or at best was thrown in as an after thought. This must have been hurtful since Randi has been in radio for so long, and had been trying to get syndicated for years. Along come these two non-radio people and the red carpet is rolled out for them. Add to this the fact that she works in a different studio from Al, and she has complained about it's shortcomings a lot. Probably seemed to her that, despite her success, she was being treated like second rate talent.

So I think she was mostly annoyed at management and the media, not Al.

Another point - Randi's talked often about having poor social skills around celebrities (Al would qualify). She says she doesn't know how to act towards them. I'd guess it took a while for her to develop a good rapport with Al.

14. yes.
And McCain was there and she wanted to meet him and she described it like they kept him from coming into her studio.

She's not getting the props she deserves, which is the fault of Clear Channel, because they are the ones who refused from day one to let her go nationwide. Were it not for them she would be as big as name as Stern, or at least as Rash.

At the start of the show, she raved about what a nice person Janeane is.

Al Franken bores the living hell out of me on radio. Otherwise, I am a huge fan, but I cannot listen to him. I love Randi, but I do think she deals with every caller as an adversary, even when they are not, but this too is probably from being deprived and finally getting a forum to espouse her view and show her knowlege. She is a true radio person to me, and I have to admit I'd feel the way she does if I were in her shoes, but I don't think that talking about it on the air is the best way to handle it.

21. I think this works both ways.......
I think Al thinks he's the King of AAR and is somewhat jealous of RR too. She IS awful good and he just gets by sometimes. No, I'm kidding. Al does OK but it took him a while to get the hang of radio.

23. While I think Randi is better
than both Jeanene and Al, I also realize that I had never heard of her before AAR. Hopefully she see's that she's getting lots more exposure thanks to AAR and Al and Jeanene see that they could learn alot about pacing from Randi. Instead of all this pussyfooting ;)
