Shalikashvili suffers a serious stroke.
Retired Gen. John Shalikashvili, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and now an adviser to Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry, has been hospitalized in Washington state after a severe stroke, Pentagon officials said Monday.

Shali is one of the good guys, a Kerry advisor and endorser, and someone who has spoken out quietly but forcefully against the Iraq fiasco. Let's all wish him a speedy and complete recovery. Having lived for a time with a stroke victim, I can tell you it's a terrible thing.

2. Yup - one of the good guys

That he appeared at the DNC... well, they should check for
needle marks... I just wouldn't put it past them.

4. Can we nip this stuff in the bud?

He's a 68 year old man. They sometimes have strokes.

I can think of a few thousand people the Bush people might want to destroy before they get down to Shalikashvili.

5. Sure... it's most likely just that he is old.

But I happen to think these people are evil personified.
That's why we call them the BFEE.

6. I understand
but there hasn't been ONE bad thing that happened to a Democrat or a supporter of a Democrat in the last few years where SOMEBODY here hasn't immediately blamed Bush.

People die, people have strokes, planes crash. Hillary lives. Michael Moore lives. Greg Palat lives. Bev Harris lives. Richard Clarke lives. Paul O'Neill lives. Robert Byrd lives. I just can't imagine the BFEE sitting in a big boardroom making a list of their worst enemies and putting John Shalikashvili, John Kennedy Jr. and Paul Wellstone at the top of the list.

8. Disagree about Wellstone.

There actually was a lot of motivation to remove him.
It could have been an accident, but there are plenty of
"anomalies" surrounding the crash and the hours immediately
after that.

But yeah, Shalikashvili wouldn't be on the top of any list
from what I know about his involvement with things.

9. actually
there aren't really a lot of "anomalies" about his crash. There's only a lot of internet speculation. There's the same level of "anomalies" about Vince Foster or Ron Brown's deaths, but I don't give them any credence.

Anybody determined to prove a point can make ANY occurrence seem unlikely. The unthinking right wing believed all the "evidence" against Bill and Hillary, the unthinking left believes all the "evidence" against Bush. Neither side is right to blindly accept every assertion as true, and to consider ever fact in the worst light.

But we agree on Shalikashvili and I wish him the very best. He wasn't just an American, he was someone who actively BECAME an American, and that is always worthy of respect.

3. My condolences to him, his family, and the Kerry campaign.....
My grandmother had a severe stroke that has basically erased her memory, taken her sight, made her hard of hearing, and limited many of her motor skills. This is a very difficult situation for anyone to endure and I send sympathy to his family and wish him the best of luck.

13. How very Rommel of him...
I wish him well and hope that he recovers fully. On the other hand, I am very suspicious of the timing of this 'stroke'.
