"Pre-election period...pre-election plot...pre-election threats:" These rolled off National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice's lips no less than seven times yesterday on CNN's Late Edition as she discussed the likely timing of a terrorist attack. She stayed on message.

With each new revelation of torture, the "few-bad-apples" explanation strains credulity closer to the breaking point. Nor can it be denied that the abuse took place on this administration's watch. Thus, there are likely to be increasing demands that the commander-in-chief - or at least his defense secretary - take responsibility. Where is it that the buck is supposed to stop?

Connecting Dots

What has all this to do with Condoleezza Rice's multiple mention of "pre-election threats?" Can these two dots be connected? I fear they can.

When John Ashcroft fired the opening shot in this campaign to raise the specter of a "pre-election" terrorist event, it seemed to me that the administration might be beginning to prepare the American people to accept postponement or cancellation of the November election as a reasonable option.

Journalist Seymour Hersh described the initiative sketchily in his biography of Henry Kissinger, The Price of Power. Hersh reported that U.S. intelligence “agencies had caught on that Chennault was the go-between between Nixon and his people and President Thieu in Saigon. … The idea was to bring things to a stop in Paris and prevent any show of progress.”

6. Nixon was just a smuck taken along for the ride by Henry Kissinger

What is amazing about Henry Kissinger is he remained virtually unscathed through all them years. Truth be told you could see his fingerprints over so much of it.

Henry Kissinger was playing both sides in the 68 election. "The trials of Henry Kissinger" a documentary explained this little facet about the double dealing very well.

2. They overthrew the government in 2000

why would they allow free elections now after going through all that trouble?

The constitution says the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Those words are not open to interpretation other than what they explicitly say. There is no other interpretation. If they postpone/cancel the elections they will have effectively suspended the entire constitution. At that point we will be living under a provisional government/dictatorship, whatever. But it will not be the constitutional government of the United States.

Then the ball will be in our court to decide what to do, about the constitution being suspended. I'm afraid that at that point words will not be sufficient to get our government back.

If Bush continues to trail Kerry after the RNC, fully expect this to happen in late October. Do not act surprised.
