Sen.Roberts: Goss has no chance, pick needs to transend politics
This is from July 14 2004. They were talking about it (Robert's remarks) on GMA this am and said that Dems would probably let it go.

"the uniter"* still insists on extreme partisan politics in the middle of the war on terror. Republican Senator Roberts confirms that.

Rep. Goss has no chance of heading CIA: Roberts
By Alexander Bolton

Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, yesterday dismissed the chances of Rep. Porter Goss’s (R-Fla.) becoming director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

<snip>

Goss’s candidacy has foundered because of opposition from Senate and House Democrats who believe he is too partisan to run the CIA. The agency is at the center of the political battle over whether the invasion of Iraq was justified.

“Porter Goss? That trial balloon went up, and Sen. Rockefeller got out his BB gun and popped it out of the sky,” said Roberts in a wide-ranging interview in his Hart Building office, referring to his committee’s ranking member. “We do not want a partisan fight right before the election,” Roberts said.

“The door’s wide open; that’s their pick,” Roberts said, referring to the Bush administration. “My only message to the White House is if they do this, make it an extraordinary person that will get bipartisan support.

<snip>

Speaking of candidates qualified to take over at the CIA, Roberts said, “We need someone to take charge and make it a five or six year . Someone who transcends into the future without politics.”

1. Someone who transcends into the future
>>I want someone who can transcend into the past and tell me what he was doing with the head of Pakistan Secret Service on the morning of 911. Especially if this dude wired Mohammed Atta 100,000 the week before 911. Even if the wire transfer is just a rumor... and I have no reason to believe that it is.... the rest of this story is equally unsettling. Look hard at the last 9 words in the lower paragraph. There is a link on this page to the main story... I'm heading there now.

Background on Porter Goss, Bush's New CIA Chief
>>During the Sep11th week, it was Porter Goss, together with Bob Graham, who met with the head of Pakistan Secret Service, ISI, who was already in the U.S. before the attacks. The reason for this meeting was never disclosed.<<

>>Put these facts together with Clinton's recent autobiography, which finally officially confirms the rumors that Sharif and Clinton were working on putting together a commando team to go into Afghanistan and capture or kill Bin Laden at the time of the coup, and that Musharraf and Ahmad immediately cancelled the operation...<<

3. Following link from previous post "Amazing"
http://inn.globalfreepress.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=485

>>Q: Dr. Rice?

Ms RICE: Yes?

Q: Are you aware of the reports at the time that the ISI chief was in Washington on September 11th, and on September 10th $100,000 was wired from Pakistan to these groups here in this area? And why was he here? Was he meeting with you or anybody in the Administration?

Ms RICE: I have not seen that report, and he was certainly not meeting with me.13

(...)

Although there is no official confirmation, in all likelihood General Mahmoud Ahmad met Dr. Rice during the course of his official visit. Moreover, she must have been fully aware of the $100,000 transfer to Mohammed Atta, which had been confirmed by the FBI...<<

2. I think * made this nomination for a couple of reasons.
Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 08:32 AM by Skidmore
1. To stir controversy to divert attention from his failures and the his plummeting numbers.

2. To be spiteful and flip all who disagree with him a giant bird, just like he has done on MLK's birthday for the past three years.

Bottom line is that he doesn't give a rat's hiney what happens to the people of this country.

8. He's Gotta Show He's "Acting" On Terror...
Just like the chimp he is, this is puffing up his balls and pounding his chest. Showing that he's a "man of action"...and trying to turn offense in what's turning into a major weakness. What were the recent polls on approval of his handling on the "war on terror"? Did I see it drop 20 points in the past 3 months?

Rove is attempting to grab the 911 Commission report as the Repugnicans and I expect more "pronouncements" coming in weeks ahead as this game is played with the fear card (terror alerts...discoveries of more evil doers) like a yo-yo to generate an aura of fear they need to divert attention from the war and the economy.

It's doubtful Congress will pass a budget, yet move into full blown confirmation hearings before this election and even immediately afterward unless Bunnypants gets a large mandate and the GOOP gain seats in both houses.

Goss is another strawman...with the credentials to be top spook that Bunnypants and Crashcart will try to frame is being held up by Democrats...especially Kerry and Edwards.

They can attack both for not pushing for their own Senate not acting on this important nomination and try to frame them as "weak on terror". I don't know if this dog will hunt or not.

10. A Yalie, from Florida...
Gosh.. think he has deep ties to the Bush family???

I think they picked this guy PRECISELY for political reasons.. in that they know the Democrats don't want him, BUT they can scream that JOHN KERRY AND JOHN EDWARDS REFUSED TO GET A CIA DIRECTOR in.. then we'll have the regularly scheduled terror warning, and it will be KERRY and EDWARDS fault for not having a regular CIA Director. See how that works?

NOTHING, NOTHING Bush does is immune from political interference. He is the absolute worst president in our history.. worst. Worse than Nixon... worse. He sacrifices American lives for his own political gain... he's the worst.

13. Hiding behind doors?
Berry's World had this nugget about Our Man Goss ...

http://berrysworld.blogspot.com/archives/2004_08_08_berrysworld_archive.html#109214894529296799

President Bush has nominated U.S. Rep. Porter Goss to lead the CIA, which must strike fear in the hearts of terrorists everywhere. Unless, of course, you happen to remember this passage from Gail Sheehy's story about the four moms who tried to get info about the 9-11 attacks:

The four moms—Kristen Breitweiser, Patty Casazza, Mindy Kleinberg and Lorie van Auken—use tactics more like those of a leaderless cell. They have learned how to deposit their assorted seven children with select grandmothers before dawn and rocket down the Garden State Parkway to Washington. They have become experts at changing out of pedal-pushers and into proper pantsuits while their S.U.V. is stopped in traffic, so they can hit the Capitol rotunda running. They have talked strategy with Senator John McCain and Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle. They once caught Congressman Porter Goss hiding behind his office door to avoid them. (Bold: mine.)

A proud day for the CIA, indeed.

Yes, indeed, and for our country!

14. Bill Nelson was sneaky on this one
said he supported Goss, but the confirmatin vote has to be AFTER the election - by which time it will be irrelevant.
