Is Ann Coulter a 'legitimate' writer?

On the Opinion page of The Clarion-Ledger on Aug. 3 was the headline for Ann Coulter's column: "Dems fake at being 'Americans.' "

What is she doing? Is she a legitimate columnist? Her viewpoint appears un-American.

I have long associated my politics with the Democratic persuasion. I'm now 83 years old, having practiced medicine for the greater part of that time. I have known and treated angry women, but Coulter is the first I've encountered who spread her venom on the opinion page of our newspaper.

1. ANYONE is a legitimate columnist

ask your paper why they'd print such tripe. not that it will do any good, but the answer lies in the who owns it. in seattle, the times prints right wing provocations regularly, despite publishing in a city where kerry will outpoll bush 4 to 1. the reason? the owner, frank blethen, is a bush man. he is a single issue republican - he wants to hand his business & fortune down to his heirs.

ann coulter is the advance scout of the think tank right - she's willing to stake out the fringe position & draw the liberal indignation so all the other RW pundits can slip below the radar & look reasonable in comparison.

2. I don't think you could call her a legitimate journalist anymore

than you can Rush Limbaugh. My problem with Ann is not that she has a platform for her hate pieces, but that equal time isn't given to a real journalist to refute her and make her back up her statements. Especially on talk shows, many of these pundits are allowed to say all kinds of outrageous and hateful things and the show hosts don't put their feet to the fire and make them tell the truth or at least retract the lies and name calling.
