Could someone give me credible sources for 3 Laura Bush rumors?
Rumor 1: She smokes (and I don't mean just that she has smokers lines).

Rumor 2: She killed her highschool sweetheart in 1963 with her car.

Rumor 3: (well, a bush rumor) Bush was engaged to a Jewish girl in the 60's before Laura.

Thank you!!!

1. #2 is not a rumor... well sort of
She was involved in the car wreck that killed her high school boyfriend. The wreck was her fault. No foul play reported. No drugs or alcohol. She pulled out onto a rural road and struck his car.

Sure, conspriacy theories abound... but that is the basic story.

First I heard of the smoking was today. Who cares?

2. I do, because I have someone who doesn't believe me
that a person in the public eye who is supposed to be a role model would be caught dead smoking these days, and I just like to be right :-)

18. bizarre thing to want to prove....
smoking is an addiction, and the ability to overcome it with willpower varies by individual. I don't think it indicates character or lack of it, nor should "role models" force themselves to "behave" just because they're role models.

IMHO, making role models of politicians is fraught with peril, because by and large they succeed by the ability to compromise or coerce through power. Many of them are former lawyers, who succeed because they are able to convincingly debate the side of whoever pays them.

Same with Athletes. Their lives are greased skids, where ability and ego are rewarded and responsibility and scholastic competence is waived by a surrounding troupe of sycophants and enablers.

Actors should not be role models, just because they are skilled at saying the words of others does not mean their own words are interesting or more valid.

IMHO ,any of those groups CAN be a positive role model, but I think its wrong to EXPECT them to be, considering their circumstances.

5. When asked by Bush's gradma
"When Laura, an only child, first joined the big Bush clan for a day of frenetic athletics at Kennebunkport, her mother-in-law recalls that the new bride stated her intention to remain on the sidelines. "I read, I smoke, and I admire," Laura Bush told her stunned new in-laws.

"There has been little change in Laura Bush, through her father-in-law's presidency, and her husband's governorship. The first lady of Texas has quit smoking, but she remains most comfortable on the sidelines. Her audience tonight should welcome the unassuming normalcy of a wife and mother who prefers a private life to the public spotlight, and who reads books, rather than writes them."

Rumor #1 - Confirmed, quit smoking

She was once a steady cigarette smoker, beginning as a teen by sneaking Winstons in a backseat crouch in friends' cars. She quit about eight years ago. (now 12)

Rumor #2 - Confirmed

When she was 17, she was involved in a fatal accident, driving through a stop sign and hitting a car operated by a high school friend. He died. She refers to it as ''a very tragic time in my life.'' No charges were brought.

Rumor #3 - Unknown.

Still digging

9. Laura said t-boning the guy was "crushing"
She really did. Press should go after laura over this death but they don't. She says "oh - it's too painful to talk about" and the matter is dropped. If they'd had this on hillary in the 90s we all know how that would have played out.

The date is January 1, 1967, and the picture and engagement notice in the Houston Chronicle trumpet the engagement of future Texas governor George W. Bush and the daughter of a Jewish father from the Bushes' Tanglewood 'hood.

14. Bartcop has a link to a "Pickles as Killer" Page.
I don't know whether Bartcop ranks as a "credible source" or not. But that page offers some very interesting facts about the murderous Miss Welch.

The make of her victim's car is a very damning detail.

Laura Welch Bush is a Cold Blooded Killer, just like her husband.

Only Laura has the nerve to do the actual killing herself.

21. He drove a corvair
And lived on the street that she ran the stop sign on (right down the road according to what I read)

The tin foiler's theory is... that she laid in wait for him and then deliberately hit him.

I have to admit...a corvair does have a very unique look to it...back then it's small size would have made it REALLY stand out!

23. Yes, they were looking to adopt according to
the book "First Son" by Bill Minutaglio has some good insights on all these issues. The Bushes were apparently looking to adopt from a church organization which had also provided children for a number of their friends that had been unable to have kids. (Makes one wonder what's in that Midland water.) The book also makes it sound as if it was the woman who drifted away from George in the engagement and that he just did it because his father had gotten engaged at that age.
