Sludge: Howard Dean No Scream in Cable Debut; 133,000 Viewers on CNBC
In his talk show debut on CNBC, Howard Dean bombed with just 133,000 viewers at 8pm on Sunday night but still did better than Tina Brown normally does with the tanking Topic A .

Even though he only averaged a paltry 68,000 in the 25-54 demo, Dean is still up sharply over Brown's awful numbers from the week prior and over July when she averaged 22,000 in 25-54, 2,000 in 18-34 (SCRATCH) and 15,000 in 18-49, just making the Nielsen minimum reporting standards.

3. that's true
I've never been counted in the ratings, and yet I watch Dean that night, but it doesn't count.

I'm sure Dean's show was a hit but we will never know because we are never counted

36. Glad to know it was helpful. When there are no replies,
it doesn't seem to do much good to go to the effort.

I'm glad you were able to see it!

However, I'm not sure there is much else on CNBC to bother with. :)

BUT....... it's always worth the effort to write and let them know you liked the program...... I got a very nice response.

7. Neither did anyone else... hence the ratings.

if it's a regular show... and they ADVERTISE it a bit (even once),
I'm sure he will get an audience. I saw the very tail end of it,
and it was good. But I found it by accident, and I figured that
Dean was just filling in for someone else.

5. Considering he was guest hosting...
...on CNBC, not exactly the most watched network, and not heavily promoted, the fact that he improved the numbers over their usual numbers should make the headline: "Dean boosts numbers for Topic A" or something of the sort. More blatant bullshit gopwhoredom from Sludge. Pffft.

9. You could write the headline to state the enormous jump in ratings from
the normal ratings at the time. CNBC's rating are always crap so what he did was give them a big boost as a guest host.

It was actually an excellent show but other than the Internet people who were reminded of it and the dean lovers already, how many people would have even known he was doing the show? Not many, I bet.

10. Even the choir is larger than that. So, what we do, is we
tape these programs, then spread the tapes around to those who are fencesitting.

That's the "underground press" of today.

ratings.

12. Exactly...
and if he were scheduled to do another show the word of mouth advertising for how good this show was, would probably triple the ratings again.

much I enjoyed the show!

DearJ,
Thank you for watching the show. It is great to hear of your enthusiasm for the Governor and for our program. Thank you for writing and be sure you tune in next week when Tina is back in action.

21. Not only was he a guest host
but I thought the show was outstanding. I remember thinking to myself how wonderful it would be if intelligent conversation like that could be the norm rather than the exception.

I suspect the networks see a big draw in Howard Dean.

16. Nobody knew he was on!!! I thank DU for the info or I wouldn't have
watched! I never heard of Tina Brown either!

How do these cable networks expect people to watch anything when they do NO advertising?

I don't remember who posted the info on DU, but I made a note of it and tuned in. Dean did a fantastic job as moderator. Much better that I would have thought, and I am a Dena supporter since last April!

I sent an email to NBC, parent of MSNBC, reguarding how good a job I thought Dean did, and I hoped they invited him back. I got a response this morning thanking me for watching, and that Tina would be back on the next show.

I don't know anything about TV production, or if it costs much to put an occasional ad on their own broadcast for new shows that are available, but it seems to me that, not to advertise the new shows, or an interesting guest host is like be deciding to sell a product from my garage. The products is there, but unless someone happens to stumble over it, nobody's going to buy anything.

Guess I'll have to write to NBC again.

19. If you liked the show send an email. Here is the address.
topicawithtinabrown@nbc.com

I heard back from them the next day. They have Donny Deutsch, John McEnroe, and Tina Brown at night now. If we don't write and say we like the shows, they will cancel.

They noted that I liked Dean's appearance as guest host when they wrote me.

26. Shares are the percentage of the people watching TV
at any given time. So a 4 share would be 4% of everyone watching TV at a certain hour.

Thusly, Drudge's show probably would have garnered a .0000000000000000000000000001 share!
;)

23. MSNBC just sucks period, it must be cursed
McEnroe got a 0.0 share with only 37,000 viewers nation wide.

So from that point of view, Dean is 3.5X better than McEnroe. Didn't anyone learn from that bad reality game show McEnroe hosted?!?!

I didn't see it promoted here on this site at all or on any of the channels listed. Maybe Drudge can be useful every now and then, even if it was unintentional.

32. Don't put too much stock in Nielsen ratings.
I don't know how widespread it is, but I know for a fact that numbers have been fudged in the past. Of course, this was a number of years ago, so maybe there's more automation now (but computers are not perfect either, as everyone is seeing with all these BBV issues). I've never been convinced their numbers were that good anyway.

But I did see the show, after reading about it here I caught the repeat a couple hours later. I thought it was quite good, and Dean did a great job.
