OMG! Bush gives little fish to Barney to torture
Did you catch the Daily Show's Moment of Zen? Bush was on a fishing show taking a small fish, the kind you have to throw back because it's illegal to catch them, off a hook and said, "I always like to give the little ones to Barney"

At which point he dropped the fish on the floor and let Barney go to town.

59. Speaking of poor sportsmanship . . .
check out one of the following to see a photo from a Yale yearbook showing Bush suckerpunching another player during a rugby game.

www.thismodernworld.com

www.dailykos.com

www.atrios.blogspot.com

Atrios has a link to a column that points out that Bush lied about playing on a varsity rugby team while at Yale (apparently, there is and was no varsity team), as well.

That photo also shows Bush performing an illegal high tackle. You can't grab anyone round the neck like that in Rugby.

4. Why am I not surprised?
I'm assuming Barney is a dog and not a purple dinosaur.

People should know that catch and release is not all that great shakes, in that about 50% of the fish are mortally wounded during the "catching" and die a slow painful death once they are thrown back in.

Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 10:38 PM by soleft
It was kind of like that. The host of the show said, what is he going to do, eat him? Bush says, no He just plays with 'em. Yeah, the fish is having such a good time.

30. Yeah, my cat was actually torturing a cicada during The Daily Show
We kept hearing it screaming out on the porch -- breep! breep! breep! -- and the cat chuckling malevolently -- mrowp! mrowp!

After the Moment of Zen, I asked my son, "Are we just as bad as Bush for letting our cat torture the cicada?" "No," he said, "cats do that naturally on their own. Bush had to give Barney the fish and incide him to go after it."

I'm not sure he was right about that, but it gives me something to consider.

54. Kurt Vonnegut pegged him: "Psychopathic Personality."
The Little Turd from Crawford kills innocent people -- tens of thousands of innocent people -- and it doesn't bother him. He's sick, all right. Probably started when he was a kid shooting frogs with BB-guns and blowing them up with M-80s. A frog, a fish, a child: what's the difference to a psycho?

Kurt Vonnegut vs. the !*!@

EXCERPT...

BLYFUSS: My feeling from talking to readers and friends is that many people are beginning to despair. Do you think that we’ve lost reason to hope?

VONNEGUT: I myself feel that our country, for whose Constitution I fought in a just war, might as well have been invaded by Martians and body snatchers. Sometimes I wish it had been. What has happened, though, is that it has been taken over by means of the sleaziest, low-comedy, Keystone Cops-style coup d’etat imaginable. And those now in charge of the federal government are upper-crust C-students who know no history or geography, plus not-so-closeted white supremacists, aka “Christians,” and plus, most frighteningly, psychopathic personalities, or “PPs.”

To say somebody is a PP is to make a perfectly respectable medical diagnosis, like saying he or she has appendicitis or athlete’s foot. The classic medical text on PPs is The Mask of Sanity by Dr. Hervey Cleckley. Read it! PPs are presentable, they know full well the suffering their actions may cause others, but they do not care. They cannot care because they are nuts. They have a screw loose!

And what syndrome better describes so many executives at Enron and WorldCom and on and on, who have enriched themselves while ruining their employees and investors and country, and who still feel as pure as the driven snow, no matter what anybody may say to or about them? And so many of these heartless PPs now hold big jobs in our federal government, as though they were leaders instead of sick.

What has allowed so many PPs to rise so high in corporations, and now in government, is that they are so decisive. Unlike normal people, they are never filled with doubts, for the simple reason that they cannot care what happens next. Simply can’t. Do this! Do that! Mobilize the reserves! Privatize the public schools! Attack Iraq! Cut health care! Tap everybody’s telephone! Cut taxes on the rich! Build a trillion-dollar missile shield! Fuck habeas corpus and the Sierra Club and In These Times, and kiss my ass!

And I know that fish bones, like chicken bones, are NOT good for a dog to have. Especially Bush's dog - he's probably seen how his "Daddy" eats pretzels - shit, he'd choke in a New York minute. Boy, wouldn't that be funny, Dubya?

he was laughing in that mean weird way he has. I was horrified. But my mom and son both said, "it's just a fish," so I thought I was just overreacting.

I just don't understand gratuitous cruelty. I can understand people eating meat, but not torturing it first for entertainment.

Aside from the fact that he's supposed to throw the fish back because it's illegal. He's above the law.

Only gratuitous brand cruelty gives you a full feeling of schadenfreude without filling you up. Why, after indulging in genuine gratuitous cruelty, you're ready for some more. Anytime. Anywhere. You might even be ready for some gratuitous sarcasm. Insist on gratuitous brand cruelty by name, and if your local grocer tries to palm an inferior product off on you, kick him square in the nads.

29. I think killing anything for a cheap laugh is disturbing behavior
particularly for an adult. But, this is the guy who pumped his fist in the air and said "Feels Good!" when the "shock and awe" bombs started falling on baghdad. Whether or not one thinks this war, or any war, is and was a "good" idea, I have to hope that the moment at which a president is committing our troops, and knows he is taking the lives of other people, would be cause for a little solemn reflection... Certainly not time to run around the room grunting like a gibbon and high-fiving your fraternity buddies. I think his disrespect for living things is apparent in many of his actions, not just this one.

44. Besides the gratuitous cruelty, it shows oddly poor judgment
I mean, what kind of politician would want to be known for torturing fish. Or, endangering his dog for that matter (I can't think this is a very good thing for the dog who might choke if he tried to swallow the fish). Also, Bush claims to be a Christian, and the fish is an important symbol to serious Christians, so you would expect him to be conscious of that fact.

Very odd behavior on many counts. He is a strangely insensitive man, or chimp, as the case may be. Although I suspect an actual chimp might show more sensitivity.

60. That was earlier in the show when he said "Lick"
At the end of the show he threw the fish to Barney who pounced on it as it flopped on the deck.

I missed TDS last night - I'll have to catch the repeat today.

It would never occur to me to give a live fish to my dog to torture. I mean, that's sick (and certainly not good for the dog, either).

The media whores keep whining about TDS, but who else is showing this clip? It speaks volumes about his sociopathic, dangerous personality.

58. something just ain't right about that boy
Psychopaths don't experience many of what are considered human emotions, such as compassion and concern. They mimic others, learning when it's appropriate to portray these feelings, in order to appear human. The fish incident shows that GW doesn't really "feel" compassion, but he also doesn't have a good ear for how to fake it. And doesn't always know when it's appropriate to at least pretend. His careless gesture with the fish shows that, in advanced middle age, he has a certain adolescent mentality, of the kind that takes a dim pleasure in the meaningless suffering of helpless creatures. He enjoys the feeling of having these creatures in his power and deciding their fate. When he threw the fish down to be mauled by his dog, he had the same self awareness of a toddler pulling the ears of a kitten. The difference being that the baby will eventually grow up.

69. And you are surprised?
This is the same boy who used to blow up frogs for fun.

Someone needs to tie that dead fish around his neck and read "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" to him.

73. "I know that the human being and the fish can coexist"
Bush's previous statement regarding fish seems to be in direct contravention of his actions.

Fish don't coexist around Bush and his gratuitous cruelty.
