Fellow pro-choice women!
Please take a look at this NARAL flash movie, if you haven't seen it already, and send it to all your pro-choice friends.

http://www.prochoiceamerica.org/leftinthedark2/

Whenever I watch this, I start crying halfway through. It's very powerful. It should be shown on TV.

(I posted this before in the Campaign 2004 thread, but it sank right away, and I doubt many people saw it.)

2. OH I don't know about that
My body and what I'm "allowed" to do with it is damn important to me and a lot of other women on this planet.

Just because the thread sank doesn't mean nobody watched it.

4. The thread was about getting the women to vote.
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 12:36 AM by athena
(Sorry; I forgot to mention that.) There are millions of women who don't vote. It's important, but it keeps sinking -- but then, most threads sink within minutes on the Campaign 2004 forum.

Edited to add:
Also, the thread was already pretty long when I posted the movie. I was too new to create a new thread, and I hadn't been to the General discussion forum.

7. It matters a LOT this election
Bush could named 2-3 new SC justices to the court- you wanna bet that they're NOT pro-choice?
There are many upcoming SC abortion trials that may very well overturn Roe V Wade.
The ultimate aim of a conservative SC is to take women's control over their bodies away...it'll then move towards birth control.
So yeah, abortion rights DOES matter this campaign.

12. See...the abortion issue isn't an issue for men
It should be, but it isn't.
But the most worrisome thing is that this generation of women- women my age- have taken our reproductive rights for granted; they do not know that our rights are slowly being taken away.
That's why the march for abortion rights was SO important- it was a reminder that WE MUST NOT LET OUR RIGHTS BE TAKEN AWAY!

positively prove paternity and the men have to pony up for child support.

It really pisses me off when people say this is an issue that doesn't matter! :grr: :grr:

Here's a 'wedge issue' for ya!!!

Usually, when a guy doesn't know much about issues concerning women and reproduction, it's an indication that the guy doesn't know much about ___ .

:wtf:

You can kick your posts up yourself to keep them on the front page. This way you can keep a post up for a day or so. That will give people plenty of time to read it and comment if they like.

btw welcome to DU.

Laura Bush: Don't nix Roe v. Wade

WASHINGTON (AP) — Laura Bush said Friday that while she thinks more can be done to limit the number of abortions, she does not believe the landmark Roe v. Wade pro-abortion ruling should be undone.

``No, I don't think it should be overturned," she said in response to a question in an interview broadcast on NBC's ``Today."

Her husband, President-elect Bush, said during last year's campaign that while he opposes abortion, he does not believe the nation is ready to overturn the 1973 decision, which legalized abortion nationwide. But, when asked what type of justices he would appoint to the Supreme Court, he mentioned conservative Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, who would vote to overturn the ruling.

``I think that we should do what we can to limit the number of abortions .. and that's by talking about responsibility with girls and boys, by teaching abstinence, having abstinence classes everywhere — in schools, in churches, in Sunday schools," Mrs. Bush said.

``I think there are a lot of ways we could reduce the number of abortions and I agree with my husband on that issue."

22. If bush really felt that way then why
did he ban funding to overseas women's health clinics that might counsel abortion the first day he was in office? That article is old news and comes from a campaign where bush acted as a moderate then did a 180 the minute he was sworn in.

If you don't think bush isn't actively working to ban roe v. wade you haven't been paying attention the past 3+ years...

24. The nation is not ready?
:wtf:

It makes sense to say something like "The nation is not ready for gay marriage" (a statement I don't agree with, btw), but "the nation is not ready to overturn Roe v. Wade"???? How can the nation not be "ready" to ban abortion, when it was banned thirty years ago?

I'm glad to hear Laura Bush clarified her opinion on choice. It's improved my sinking opinion of her somewhat. Not that it will make any difference if Shrub gets elected, but at least it shows that there is division within the Republican party.
