"people are poor because they are lazy."
I'm not sure whether this has been posted before. The article is good reading, though.

"At Harvard Business School, thirty years ago, George Bush was a student of mine. I still vividly remember him. In my class, he declared that 'people are poor because they are lazy.' He was opposed to labor unions, social security, environmental protection, Medicare, and public schools. To him, the antitrust watch dog, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Securities Exchange Commission were unnecessary hindrances to 'free market competition.' To him, Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal was 'socialism.' Recently, President Bush's Federal Appeals Court Nominee, California's Supreme Court Justice Janice Brown, repeated the same broadside at her Senate hearing. She knew that her pronouncement would please President Bush and Karl Rove and their Senators. President Bush and his brain, Karl Rove, are leading a radical revolution of destroying all the democratic political, social, judiciary, and economic institutions that both Democrats and moderate Republicans had built together since Roosevelt's New Deal."

1. Depression can easily pass for laziness.
In areas where poverty is endemic, it is still possible to have a wonderul community life. But it helps that you don't have people around calling you lazy.

And keeping it, even easier.

He's never had to work for ANYTHING. He has had zero experience with people who do.

Thats sick, hey George, was my great grandfather poor because he was lazy? he worked day in and day out in those mines, he was poor because he had a hard time speaking this language, he was an immigrant, yet he taught his children true Christian values. What a sick thing to say of him, I know it was the past but good god, this is also libertarian thought too.

We should play their game. Thirty years ago? So what, that's what they are doing to Kerry and with lies.
Something like:

"This man said 'people who are poor are lazy','Social security is socialism'
"Would you vote for him?"

picture of Bush

Then don't.

I could have sworn I just talked to them, too.

The "all poor people are lazy" is a half-baked slogan the idiot children of inherited wealth use to distract themselves from their own unproductive lives. It's the projection of shame and frustration on others.

18. NO STATEMENT IN THE WORLD PISSES ME OFF MORE!!!
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 10:21 AM by mermaid
Goddamn, that assertion of poor people being lazy just makes me completely fucking WONKY!!!

I bust my goddamn ASS!! There have been times in my life where I have held down THREE goddam jobs...and that son of a bitch wants to say I'M fucking lazy, because I'm poor?

No, poor people are poor because wealthy greedy bastard business owners are always looking to screw the little guy!!

GodDAMN it this really pisses me the fuck off!! I have observed, in Corporate America...the more money you earn THE LESS ACTUAL WORK YOU DO...and vice versa!!

Damn, I have been virtually unemployed for nearly four months, finally found a job, I start this coming Monday...meanwhile, just to make ends meet, I was dragging MY LAZY ASS out of bed at 2:30 in the morning, every morning, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK...to deliver a goddamn newspaper route that was seventy miles long...and all for a lousy $825 a month, and that is WITHOUT TAXES TAKEN OUT...and without the costs of gas or wear and tear on the car considered!!

SO...
I "made" 825 a month.
I filled my tank about 7 1/2 times a month, (once every four days) at 20 bucks a pop, for $150.
Now I'm down to $675.
Take out taxes, even at 10% the LOWEST Federal rate...82 bucks...call it 75 bucks for even figures...
Now I'm down to 600 bucks.

And this counts ZERO towards any wear and tear on the car, not to mention the oil change as normal maintenance...

So, 600 bucks, by 30 days is 20 bucks a day...and since it took me about 3 hours a day to do the damn route, I was earning roughly $6.67 an hour!!

Yeah poor people are poor becausee they are LAZY??

Well, Dubya-asshole, would YOU drag YOUR ass outta bed seven days a week, 365 days a year, no vacations, no sick days, no holidays, for that kind of pay?
and it gets better...if I ever wanted a day off, I had to find someone to sub for me...and usually had to pay them more than I would have made if I did the route myself...and if I ever missed a day, for any reason (sick, car trouble, overslept, just didn't feel like it...etc) ot was in my contract that I got docked SIXTY FUCKING DOLLARS for that day!! And this would even apply if my own mother had DIED...out of state!! I'd have had to find someone to replace me before I'd be allowed to go to her fucking FUNERAL!!

and this is "lazy??"

come call ME lazy to my FACE you god-damned mother-humper Dubya...I swear, I'd punch your stupid fucking head in if you DARED call ME lazy to my face!!

FUCK YOU, DUBYA!!!

On EDIT: I realized I'd referred to Dubya as a jackass! No good, since a donkey is OUR symbol, and I am proud of it!! No WAY will I give Dubya such a compliment as calling him a "jackass" So I edited it.

20. Feh, it's hard work being poor
I've been poor, I'm not now. It's just that the type of work changes. Frankly, I had to work a lot harder when I was not making much money.

It basically boils down to this: You can get paid for what you do, what you know or a combination of both. It's better to get paid for what you know and best to get paid for a combination.

Where the problem lies is that gaining knowledge to make your brain a more expensive commodity is vastly easier if you are a child of privilege. And if you're like the Chimp, there's nothing to do but sit back and let it all come to you.

Of course Chimp and his cohorts despise every sort of government program that has been instituted since that traitor to his class, Teddy Roosevelt, started busting trusts and had the gall to start the FDA.

Someone should tell this fuckface that:

the Serfs have always worked harder than the Aristocracy, AND

This nation was founded to reject the very class privileges that the Chimp has enjoyed his entire scumbag life.

To quote my 6 year old son: "George Bush is Poop."

and my mom was "lazy" when she worked all day spot welding for minimum wage after her Republican husband abdicated his responsibility for his family. I used to see her come home with her ankles swollen and tiny burns on her arms. Then she would cook dinner, do dishes and help us kids with their homework. Yeah, sure, she was lazy. This kind of thinking is downright sinister.

23. Repubs seem to think there's an infinite amount of work to be done,
in spite of the fact that there is a finite amount of people and a finite amount of resources.
So you can just endlessly outsource, insource, off-shore, etc, and there will alway be plenty of jobs for everyone. Sounds like someone is trying to sell snake-oil.

24. I'm reading a book right now
It's called "The Working Poor" and it talks about ALL the issues that affect poor people. Very enlightening. For one thing, it points out how something that is a minor bump in the road for the middle class is a catastrophe for the working poor, those who make minimum wage or less. If my car breaks down, I'll call in late to work and get it fixed - if a poor person's car does, they can't afford the repairs (the car is probably a piece of crap anyway) and they can't afford to miss work. Their apartment is likely filled with health hazards like mold or asbestos or old lead paint which cause health problems which limits their ability to work. Their kids get sick and they have no health insurance, etc.

Sure, some things are self inflicted, often because people are in despair and turn to drugs or alcohol to escape because nobody seems to give a shit about them. I know about this stuff - I've been there though I've long crawled out of it. Most people aren't lazy but many people have given up.

The two statements are every bit as morally bankrupt - blame the victim. 34. 15 000 000 job shortage causes poverty
to see Job Openings, go to DOL site, Project Jolt pages. Then click news releases...t of c page, click table for Job Openings Levels not Rates... then

subtract J. O.'s from unemployed... ~18 million inclucing discouraged.

result is 15 M .

the shortage forces folks to go without income... poverty.. leading to crime too. Explains many social ills.

If 15 M had tons of energy, but no jobs exist, how are they to not be poor?

Why is this stat so totally unmentioned?

39. Yesterday, I listened to Neil Boortz for 1.5 minutes.
There was an African American man on his show basically regurgitating this exact same thing. He said he had moved from somewhere in Florida to Blacksburg, VA. He has been working 2 job at the university there, but someone offered him a great job paying $14.00 an hour!

Then he went on to say how if you don't have a job, it's because you don't want to work.

Of course, Neil didn't bother to mention to him that here in the state of GA (where Neil's show is broadcast from), the poverty level for a family of four is an annual income of $35,000 or less. $14.00/hr comes to just under $30K. Now, I don't know about the cost of living in Blacksburg, VA, but that amount of money doesn't go a real long way, even here in GA.

So, yeah, sure, anyone can work for PEANUTS if they want to. Hell, I'm sure you could even work for free if you want to, but how is that going to add up in terms of buying power when there are people making 5, 10, or 15 times more than you who are competing for the same goods (namely housing) and services you are?

...and few of them work more than 40 hours a week. They also have maids to help out with housework and childrearing.

The very notion that those of us who work for less are lazy is absurd.

For someone like Bush, who was born on third base, to say that is pretty illustrative of the right-wing sense of entitlement.
