Sex and violence in Lynne Cheney's frontier Wyoming
Out of print and out of sight, except for a few copies in libraries and selling on the internet for an asking price of almost $3,000 to $25,000, is a novel, “Sisters”, written by Lynne Cheney about frontier Wyoming.

http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/opinion/la-oe-morrison11aug11,1,6452803.column

Like many novels it has plenty of sex, some of it incest and lesbian sex and a lot of violence. It also has a strong streak of feminism. Vice President Dick Cheney vetoed a move to reissue the novel.

I don’t besmirch a novelist from writing anything needed to make a good story. I know I have some kinky sex in some of my scribbling, so I guess it’s the hypocrisy about this move by Cheney essentially censoring even his own wife’s literary work that gets to me.

You may have to register, but it’s free. Here are some selected paragraphs:

<snip>

It's one weird summer when the nation's favorite beach reading inclines to bestsellers by Bill Clinton, the 9/11 commission, John Dean and Tommy Franks … real page-turners.

But then there's another book, written by another well-known political figure, and it's a doozy. Throughout its pages are fornication (the heroine with her late sister's husband), incest (half brother knocks up half sister), adultery (the heroine, with her first husband's friend), contraception (by the wed and the unwed) and lesbian couplings (the heroine's sister and an older woman). And incidentally, lynchings, dogicide, cattle theft and robber-baronism.

The book was published 23 years ago, before the author's husband became one of the nation's most influential politicians, and before the author became a Valkyrie in the culture wars. And the author is … aha, you thought I was going to say Hillary Clinton, didn't you?

It's Lynne Cheney, wife of the Republican vice president. The book is a frontier novel of the 19th century called "Sisters." It's hot, it's sexy and it's out of print.

1. Lynne Cheney and O'Reilly ought to collaborate on a book
(Both have written soft porn in the past)

Of course, two super massive egos working on one book wouldn't work.

I'm sure Mr. Hand would pitch into the effort as well.

3. She was the homecoming queen?
I always thought the pretty girl became the homecoming queen back in the fifties. That would not be her.

15. OMG, you just gave me an image.
Think Lee Remick in "A Face In The Crowd" with Andy Williams. Great movie, which explained a few things.

18. Apparently his lawyers could.
What they said was that it wasn't one of Lynne's better works, so Cheney refused to let it be republished. They were very specific that it was Dick Cheney who did the veto not Lynne. I guess good Republican wives leave those details to the man.

24. The problem is that she can't write well
I had to read one of her books for a class in college (long story), and it was all I could do to actually finish it, it was so bad. That woman is messed up too, as she tries to be feminist and then turns around and censors herself. Crazy.
