2. Those damn Shia invaded Najaf!! We're just there to liberate the people...
of... What's that? The Shia are the natives of Najaf?

Oh. That's different.

Never mind.

3. That's right. They're native.
Just like those dastardly native americans who were responsible for the disaster at Little Bighorn.

12. So then you agree that freedom of the press is worth fighting for?
Say, for example, you run a newspaper and somebody comes along and shuts it down.

11. While I Agree With Most Of Your Post, I Don't Think...
it applies in this case. The Shia are the majority in Iraq. The only people who would have you believe that this uprising is based in religious extremism are the US media and government. This whole bloody (Al Sadar) mess came about because the US shut down a newspaper. Before we trundled into that fiasco Al Sadar was a marginal figure riding on the coattails of his dead father.

21. Perhaps the Iraqis would like to have their country back?
Is it possible that we invaded their country on a pre-text, blew up their stuff and killed thousands of civilians, tortured them, stole their oil and they are a little testy about this...and would like us to leave?

Is it just possible???

If the Chinese invaded the U.S. to get rid of our WMD, help us with our corrupt bought off government and to "free us", would you join the Chinese militia suppressing America, or, perhaps would you fight to repel the invaders from the other country?

(maybe I shouldn't ask that question)

13. Umm, not to be nitpicky or anything
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 03:19 PM by crunchyfrog
but I believe it was in fact the Americans who invaded and occupied Iraq. Also, I believe that Iraqi Shias and not American soldiers are the natural inhabitants of Najaf.

Not trying to make the Democratic Party look bad, I'm not an official spokesperson for it anyway, but America does on occasion do something wrong. It's just part of being human and I don't think pointing it out makes one a "blame America firster".

Oh, and by the way, around here it's usually referred to as the Democratic party not the Democrat party.

:eyes: back atcha.

15. This is a trick question. Right?
Let's see.

A. A bunch of untrained guys armed with popguns decide to take on tanks, helicopters, and artillery, because they just wanna have something to do on a tedious Thursday.

B. An occupying miltary decides to throw in a major force to quell dissent by the locals.

I'll take B. What do I get? A copy of "The Destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto"?

22. C. Both of the above
There was that series of articles in Slate a couple months back that claimed both of these perspectives were accurate -- that a great deal of the insurrection is being performed by unemployed, unschooled teenagers with literally nothing better to do than shoot off mortars and run through the streets waving their machine guns around.

Combine them with foreign fighters, Saddam loyalists, religious extremists, and a whole bunch of folks who are just plain mad because we invaded their country, and you get the insuurection. There's a great number of disparate entities working together and independently to oust American troops, and bored guys with more balls than sense is apparently one of those factions. Thanks God I'm not there...
