NJ Gov May Resign: Rumors that McGreevey is Gay and is accused of Rape
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 02:47 PM by liberalpragmatist
On Dailykos.com, on one of the diaries, they are reporting rumors that McGreevey is Gay or Bisexual and a man who had a sexual liason with him is apparently suing him for sexual assault and rape.

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/news/wabc_081204_golan.html

A local ABC news story has some details.

Dailykos.com has some comments about the situation. The following is a post from a Dailykos diary:

More to the story.... (none / 0)

I just got more information.
Apparently, McGreevey is gay. He has been having relationships with a certain gay man. This gay man filed a civil complaint today alleging sexual assault and rape.

McGreevey will resign at 4 pm and the President of the Senate of New Jersey will take over.

Senator Corzine will mostly likely run in 2005 for the governorship.

And, the story is now on Drudge.

STRENGTH AND WISDOM ARE NOT OPPOSING VALUES

UPDATE: Apparently rumors concern Golan Cipel, an Israeli, and the Governor's security advisor. Rumors are he's trying to blackmail him by outing him.

2. Too bad he isn't Governor of CA
Out there you can, apparently, grope whomever you wish and still be Governor.

Oh, right, you have to be a repuke to get the free pass. Never mind...

6. I just find this incredibly hard to believe
I guess I'll just wait for the press conference.

If this were so, I wonder why there weren't rumors before. His Republican opponent had tons of money for detectives to turn this kind of thing up.

8. There were tons of rumors of this before.
Many. The Golan Cipel story was so well known that newspapers used to call him McGreevey's "special friend".

12. I knew the republicans had a massive hissy fit about him
But I never saw any references to him as a "special friend."

Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 02:55 PM by Gman
since these type "scandals" are much more likely to come from GOP officeholders??

Just wondering.

I just can't understand how a Democrat could sexually harass someone.

14. This is just flame baiting.
Are they trying to smear him because he is gay? I will believe none of this unless there is some proof.

18. I wasn't talking about him being
gay---that is not a smear.

I was talking about the rumor that he supposedly raped someone---I will not believe it until there is some evidence. To me that rumor (which is very ugly) sounds like someone just trying to smear him because he is gay. I hope that is more clear.

19. Oh, I know, and I wasn't accusing you of saying the "gay thing" was smear
I was simply saying it was confirmed that he's resigning and is gay.

But I agree - by all accounts it seems to have been a consensual affair, not a rape or sexual assault, so it does seem to me like this Cipel character (if that's who) is just blackmailing him. Those are just the rumors and that should await later confirmation.

20. Thanks. Actually--I
really wasn't very clear in my post--so it is probably good that I clarified things.

I agree with you totally--I think someone tried to use rumors (perhaps lies) to ruin him.

I am glad that he stepped up and came out--this indicates that he is an honest man--and it makes me even less likely to believe the charges until sufficient proof is shown.

I can't believe he was honest enough to admit all that in public.
Very brave, but too bad it was under such shitty circumstances.

21. Was McGreevey's aide recruited as a Republican "Mata Harry"?
The timing of this scandal is awfully suspicious. The WH needs NJ's electoral votes, and Dubya was 20 points behind Kerry at the last Star-Ledger poll, if I remember correctly.

22. Suspicious
The timing of this incident is most suspicious considering that we are right in the midst of a hotly contested election. Also as I understand it the relationship with this Israeli character was not only entirely consensual it was also quite longstanding. Consequently I would view the veracity of any rape or sexual harassment allegations with a good deal of suspicion. Such charges smack of repug dirty tricks. On a more personal note...this public admission and the almost certain villification and humiliation that will follow it was an act of great personal and political courage...Governor McGrevey is to be saluted for his strong moral fiber, bravery and honesty.

23. McGreevy came out today...
He has also announced his resignation (because he had an affair). There are no charges of rape. http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/08/081204govOut.htm
