1. What a courageous man
Buy my heart goes out to his family too. Only because they have to deal with a highly personal ordeal and the media will make a shitstorm out of this.

29. Sorry, he's a slimeball. Had it not been for this sexual harrassment suit
McGreevy would never have come out of the closet. He has ruined the lives to at least four women...his two wives and his two daughters. I have no sympathy for his sorry ass.

4. He should have stayed in office
Little would the likes of Jerry Falwell know that the "strong moral family man" was really an abominable sodomite, and that you CAN be gay without the wrath of God coming down to crush you.

6. Certainly, but what of Golan Cipel?
If he had been a true American, would this have ever come to pass?

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/politics/US/mcgreevey_040812.html

Even as he made the announcement, a lawsuit is being filed this afternoon by the former adviser, Golan Cipel, in Mercer County, N.J., Court, three sources told ABC News.

* * *

Cipel is a poetry-writing former Israeli Defense Force soldier who, despite being a foreign national, was appointed by McGreevey to the homeland security post and subsequently was forced to resign the $100,000-a-year position.

McGreevey adviser Golan Cipel resigns

Published in the Home News Tribune 8/15/02
By BOB INGLE
GANNETT STATE BUREAU

TRENTON -- Golan Cipel, the controversial and highly paid adviser to Gov. James E. McGreevey, has resigned for personal reasons, the Governor's Office said yesterday.

* * *

Cipel, 33, an Israeli citizen, was originally hired as McGreevey's lead security adviser in February. He resigned in March after questions about his background, but was kept on the government payroll at $110,000 a year.

The administration declined to give a formal job description or allow Cipel to be interviewed by the media.

McGreevey has said he met Cipel on a trip to Israel in 2000 and decided to bring him to the United States. Cipel was first hired by the Democratic State Committee, which also paid his $1,100 registration fee with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

7. I think he represent the truth of gay repression in America
it's unfortunate what he had to go through and what so many men and women do every day.
I can only hope this country begins to change where people don't have to live this sad double lives.

I feel bad for his family and him.

14. He may or may not be, but this is a failure.
Just like when George Michael failed.

Michael could have come out when his reputation was clean and all but the bible nuts would have applauded him. Instead, he chose to troll public restrooms for sex, got caught and used that as his occasion to come out.

Now, with rumors of nepotism, sexual harrassment, rape and blackmail swirling, McGreevy decides to come out, leave office and leave the democratic voters who put their blood, sweat and tears into getting him elected high and dry.

Why should coming out always be associated with something sordid? It should be a positive event in life!

If he had come out a few months after his election, filed for divorce, dated this Israeli guy but not put him in a cushy job, there would be no legitimate complaint against him. That would have been the right thing to do.

Sure, coming out after a scandal that makes it obvious you're gay is better than continuing a charade, but it's not especially admirable to me.

I wish McGreevy & his family well. I hope he salvages his career, after all, politicians have done much worse than this.

Also, I don't think he should resign if it was just an affair. He should apologize, move on, and let the chips fall where they may politically.

If there is a major case coming up, however, he did the right thing.

16. He Lies To His Family and Shames His Party
Sorry, but I really must disagree with you, Tnhatesbush.

This guy is no hero. He's an asshole!

Here's my thoughts from another thread:

The headline isn't that McGreevey's gay.

The headline (news) here is that that he is a selfish, overly-ambitious and egotisticaL ASSHOLE.

And gives homophobes like Rick Santorum ammunition to hurt progressives.

This is why I loathe closeted homosexuals in positions of power.

They are LIARS.

They are BAD PEOPLE.

I came out at 13 in Texas in the 1960's so there's no reason whatsoever for this kind of shit to be going on in 2006.

Now, he admits he's "gay" and drags everyone down with him.

I wish he'd stayed in the closet....forever.

With friend like this, queers don't need enemies.

Sorry.

you that you were able to come out in the 60's, But until any of us have walked in the shoes of Mr. McGreevey, then we have no right to judge him. None of us even knows what all he has been through.

22. Israeli Defense Force soldier?
WTF?

Not your basic boy next door. Somebody made some fast moves on somebody, since the meeting in Israel couldn't have been real extended.

Wonder if he was set up? (Okay, it does take two to tango, it's true.) But, if he was set up. Why?

24. I don't admire the bastard at all . . .
. . . because he's hiding behind his homosexuality to cover up the real reasons why he's resigning.

That's a f#cking disgrace.

25. In a nutshell
exactly right.
Why should people who have lived their lives truthfully and with integrity have to rise to this slime's defense? He's gay? He wants to come out? Fine. Get divorced and step into the shoes of those of us who have never tried to live a lie for political expediency. Don't try to wrap yourself in our mantle when your infidelities and related political corruption are threatening your political livelihood.

26. Every gay person I know can best be described . . .
. . . as DECENT and HONORABLE people.

They may prefer to hide their sexuality, but that is their own business. Their conduct in the jobs and their "public" lives is exemplary.

27. He should never have married a woman and ruined her life
I feel very sorry for the plight of gay people who are confused and discriminated against. I don't think there is ANYTHING admirable about marrying someone under false pretenses and breaking their heart.

28. Don't feel sorry for his wife . . .
. . . she knew exactly who he was and what she was getting into when she married him.

That child of theirs is in for a rough ride in her life, through no fault of her own.
