Pick a day and smack CNN all at once !
Why don't everyone set a day and bombard CNN with a Cheney You!

It would be effective. That many people hitting all at once.! Kinda of a virtual march on CNN. All in one day. Lit up switchboards and overflowing computers ! Plus Fax....Let us just pick a day and do it ! instead of this complaining and dribble one letter at a time.Calling them for their News you can count on !
A major Attack about Dem Bashing, is what is called for here !

10. do we do this in a 'blitz' attack (heh) or spread out over time...
a one hit wonder would be fun, but would it be as effective as a consistent flow of emails to them.

Have a roll call of who is willing to participate, divide us up and have each of us commit to a certain number of emails a day - under different email names.

14. Not a Chenney-You. A Truth Storm
Thing of a Truth Storm as sort of a Flash Mob of public outrage at the way they are conducting themselves.

Obscenity won't work. Hell, they probably have filters that deep six obscene emails. I would if I were they.

But a few thousand emails and telephone calls on one day, each citing of a large list of well documented partisan whoring of the previous week, would be wonderful.

Some emails could be targeted at the host/show where it occured, copied to main emails.

But we'd need a week worth of specific examples, done up by Sunday and ready for the torrent on Monday.

How do we do this?

21. Here is the strategy...if there are freepers we will do it next day too
I say we do it Monday 16th between 9AM and 4PM EDT. We need Time Warner's email and fax number too. We need to get phone numbers up and fax numbers and we call it Demanding Unbiased Media Reporting...
or Taking it Back or whatever we want to call it. Mondays are Hell and they are gonna have to deal with us. I am also saying it is a good idea to single out CNN then MSNBC and Fox. We do it hard and fast. Remember the virtual march on Washington. Well that went to a lot of congresspeople and this is one business who is gonna get really tired of us real quick ! it was their idea to report as they are doing..Now it is up to us to stop this propoganda machine with virtual protests !

They will change their tactics and realize we are not just a few disgruntled people but a half the nation ! Can some of you provide links to The managementof CNN. I will look but some of you are really good at this. Cutting and pasting. Time Warner HQ and their Fax and phone numbers.

We are the Calvary and we need to spread this protest to every other progressive/liberal site to do the same.

Then we can do the same with this conservative media bunch shedding bad light on our candidate.
Any more suggestions. Also, we need to do this more than once.
The whole month of ..different days leading up to the RNC so they will report fairly !
Suggestions ?

Do they happen to know anyone that actually works at the CNN building? A Secretary, maintenance man that would be fixing the fax machine when it get's broken LOL?

We need some inside people that will tell us what's happening. I'm sure there must be at least ten of our friends and relatives that will keep us posted.

Should we start late Sunday night so that they can enjoy all of this with their morning meetings? What a wake up call that will be!

Let's roll, roll, roll!!

26. What I believe we need, in order of importance:
1. roster of DUers of those willing to do it.
2. roster of DUers willing to spread the word to LW blogs and sites.
3. something of a script; I'm a published writer and English teacher, if you'd like, I'll flesh it out.
4. a schedule; we should do this over several days or even weeks in order to let it pick up steam.
5. target: Robert Novak is my suggestion; why aim low? if we want the media back, let's set an example.

Anyone else with suggestions?

If you are willing to get involved, keep those replies coming!

33. Excellent plan!
I would only quibble with the emphasis on Novak. To me, the issue of his treachery is separate from the issue at hand -- removing George Bush from the WH. Novak is clearly identified "for the Right" on "Crossfire." More damaging to our candidate, IMO, are Woodruff, Crowley, Schneider (CNN's Senior Political Analyst, also a fellow, and I presume on the payroll of, the right-wing thinktank American Enterprise Institute), Blitzer, etc., who should be nonpartisan but are not.

I was particularly incensed by the Crowley hour-long Kerry hitpiece "Born to Run," which ran several times on CNN around the time of the Dem Convention. They've been advertising a similar hour-long piece on Bush, and can you imagine that IT will be a hitpiece? Not.

There's also the attention to trivial issues like use of the word "sensitive," and no coverage, I don't think, of something like outing a double-agent who was inside AlQaeda!

Sorry -- just some two-cents for a possible script, which you are very kind to volunteer to write!

73. Let's Rotate and kept them guessing

If they know that we will all hit them on Monday they will gear up for that and either shut off their emails.

#1 What if we rotate from next Monday - next Friday
Monday - DU's and their friends who have a first name starting with A - E, Tuesday F-J etc. etc. etc.

That way they will have no idea how many people they are dealing with but we will be plugging up their system for the entire week.

#2 Isn't it CNN that asks if your message is positive or negative?
If so, we should check "positive" because they will probably only read the one's that are checked positive...

Ex: Dear CNN,

I just love the way that Robert Novak slurs his words as if he is drunk. Sometimes it is hard to tell if he is a half idiot or a complete idiot. Shame on you for this low form of journalism to our precious airways.

I am sure that you will keep him on your biased station. However, Valerie Plame will out him some day soon and he will go to jail.

I will be watching another channel when that happens.

Goodbye to you and all of your sponsors,

Signed,

Happy Day
New Jersey

there's a tiny box on the left side that says "contact us".
That takes you to some choices... pick CNN TV.
From there we could select either Iraq War or Election 2004.
Then flood 'em!
Our DU link sites (on the DU homepage) should all be informed. Maybe they could post the date and instructions too.

45. One possible strategy might be ....
to collectively sign a petition on a daily basis to all major media outlets asking why they are not reporting a “fair and balanced” view upon……

This for example:

Why is it that your news organization do not provide your audience with a more balanced view of Senator Kerry’s military experience in Vietnam? (EXPAND ARGUMENT) It would certainly seem that all of the “wires” which stream into your news organization would certainly have privy to such “news worthy” events such as the following:

I have a site but it is hard with that stupid passport to get it in there. its a group site. its called http://groups.msn.com/FocusGroupNow/whatsnew/
But I think we can do it from here. Take back the Media is a good site and members here. Symbolman. I think some of these suggestions including spreading the word is great. Some of those savy with a computer can help get that thing on a page and then we copy and paste with info and start the CNN Blitz......
Any volunteers for helping put this together, otherwise we are just gonna hit the conservative media ! Ready or not ! We will figure it out between then and thru the convention to make sure they don't give a hero worship to the Shrub !

Also, could really cost them money--I'm willing to cancel my Time-Warner cable broadband (stuck with it for tv). I can get DSL, send money to dif. arm of the beast.

Even 100 people do it, similar letters, same day, must get noticed. $60K. Spread it past DU, maybe we get a 1000--real money.

79. Can we begin to collect "talking points" -- here's Sheila Samples...
from her recent "open letter":

....And the bewildered "what does all this mean?" Judy Woodruff, whose questions are generally preceeded with vague non-attribution. "According to those who know," Woodruff recently asked a Kerry aide, "John Kerry has a problem. People don't know him, and those who do don't agree with him. What does this mean for Kerry? Is Kerry in trouble? How are you addressing this?"

Your recent overdosing on unsubstantiated character assassinations fed to CNN by oil-soaked creeps who call themselves "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" is disheartening. To be perfectly fair, Aaron Brown refused to cover the story. Brown did an editorial before his show after a day of blanket CNN coverage and, without mentioning the subject, said he didn't think that a rumor should be put out there to be "judged," even if both sides were represented. "For that reason," Brown said, "I will not be covering a certain story -- and YOU can be the judge of whether I am right or wrong." Oh, that there were more Aaron Browns at CNN...

However, for the rest of you to take a destructive right-wing "advertisement" smearing Senator John Kerry and give it massive "Scott Peterson" coverage goes beyond the pale. Was there not even one CNN operative who would take the time and effort to investigate these shameless allegations before running to the camera, throwing vicious rumors out there, and asking partisan pundits -- "What is the truth? Is Kerry really unfit to be president?"

If that is your idea of objectivity and "bias" for the truth, why not toss some rumors about George Bush out there for the idealogues to gnaw on? Since you have no problem going back to the 60's to dig up trash about Senator Kerry, let's see some "coverage" of Bush's cocaine habit, 40 years of being nothing but a falling-down-drunk, abandoning his duty station in time of war, his fraudulent stock dealings. Let's take a look at Bush's refusal to fund his signature Leave No Child Behind program. Let's talk about 37,000 Iraqi civilians splattered across the landscape; nearly 1,100 coalition troops slaughtered -- tell us about the investigation you are working feverishly on to discover who is responsible for the war crimes at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo prisons....

(Lots more.)

80. From Columbia Journalism Review, Campaign Desk...
re. CNN's Democratic Convention coverage, some quotes from CNN transcripts:

Woodruff: Another argument the Republicans make, the Bush Bush/Cheney campaign John Kerry has voted to cut defense. They have produced reams of documents to back up votes that he made in the United States Senate that they say show compare to practically not only the Republicans, but compared to many other Democrats. He has not voted to support the kind of military spending that would create a strong America....

***

....Ralph Reed: "I think what you have, Wolf, is the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, John Kerry, who picked the fourth most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, John Edwards."

As almost everyone covering the campaign knows, this charge is inaccurate. The ratings Reed refers to are for 2003 only, and because Kerry and Edwards were on the campaign trail, they participated in only a small number of votes. (For more details, see this explanation by Campaign Desk Asst. Managing Editor Bryan Keefer on Spinsanity.) But again, Blitzer doesn't contradict Reed.

Reed: "You can't serve in the U.S. Senate for 19 years, vote for higher taxes 350 times...and not have your opposition talk about it."

Once again, Blitzer allows Reed to make misleading claims (see FactCheck.org's explanation) without clarification....

***

....Blitzer: But you know the criticism, general, that we keep hearing, he voted to go to war in Iraq and that after the War, he voted against the $87 billion to pay for the body armor, to pay for the support of the troops in Iraq.....

***

Woodruff: Historically, Democrats have had trouble with that issue (national security). Ever since Vietnam and George McGovern who we talked to in this hall today. Democrats have to time and again prove they're as strong as building up the military, building up the Pentagon, the defenses of this country. John Kerry has that trouble this year....

***

Crowley: So mostly, John Edwards will talk about John Kerry, who finally made it to town aboard a slow boat to Charleston named the "Lulu E," a teensy bit outside the muscular image the Kerry campaign is hoping to conjure up to show voters he's tough too....

(Much more.)

83. Adding 8/12 Republican-talking-points "sensitive" poll question --
"Is being sensitive important in the war on terror?"

CNN amplified this Republican attempt to make a campaign issue of the use of one word, taken out of context, by promoting the issue in its poll question.

Count me in. I read their website although I stopped watching cable shortly after the 2000 appointment.

Let's ask each reporter at CNN to apologize for covering up the truth on the WMDs during the pre-Iraq war frenzy. Each of them should ask the families of all who have died in Iraq (including innocent Iraqis) for forgiveness. Personally, I think we should ask each reporter to resign for failing to tell the truth about this issue. They should be too ashamed to continue working as reporters.

I was wondering when someone would suggest this. I'm a mere babe in the woods compared to all you old timers here. So I need to be taught!
I would suggest that this be as organized as possible, have the info in the same place at all times so all of us can find it - such as when it changes from CNN to Fox, etc.

I'm great at following orders. Horrible at writing, so if others can write, I can be a madwoman at emails, faxes, snail mail, phone calls, etc. And I think doing all of those things would help even more. Especially snail mail for those of us who have the time, like me, to do so.

We really do need to spread the word to every LW site and blog we can think of.

I'd also like it if we could do something with our local papers. My local paper, the San Diego Union Tribune, is a * paper. It makes me sick to read it. But I don't know enough, I don't have the skills needed to write forceful, fact filled letters in rebuttal to the garbage they are always putting out. Yesterday's opinion section had letters to the editor, opinion pieces, and editorial cartoons, all for * and against Kerry. I need the BIG GUNS from DU to help out on things like this, if any of you have the time. Is there a place we can all post for items like this? That way I could post the 'offending' section and the people here with the background/knowledge can help out. And not just for me, but for all of our local papers who are in cahoots with * and the rest of the RW media. I know, it's asking for work, lots of work, but I'm begging on behalf of everyone here who is like me, not educated enough on everything we need to know to do our best jobs. That's why I'm here. To learn. But in the meantime, I need HELP. And I'll be helping out in any way that I can. Count me IN.

And a double kick for the late night/early morning crew.

:kick:

:kick:

And Vetwife, a personal thank you for posting this to begin with. I had been online, and went out to read the paper. After I read the editorial section, I was in tears. Just didn't feel like there was any hope left. I came in here and turned off the computer and sat in the dark in front of the TV, wondering how in the hell Kerry and all of us good guys were going to be able to pull this off, what with all of *'s dirty tricks, lies, you name it. But instead of going to bed, I turned the computer back on at about 3:30am and I found your post and with it, I found hope. Bless you woman!
I'm poor, I'm broke and I can't afford to move to Canada, so Kerry HAS to win. (that's just my personal 'waaaaaaaaa' moment).

Kerry has to win because this country cannot survive another four years of *. We NEED Kerry and we need each other to get all of us to Nov. 2nd and to those hangovers we all want to have -- from celebrating too much!

114. Yes, Yes,Yes!
I have sent a number of emails to CNN, FOX, and MSNBC, and I've tried to encourage other DUers to do the same. If you go to their sites, you can find a partial list of sponsors. I've sent many letters to them as well. I'm ready!! I have all of Sunday and most of Monday. If the freeps can stop the showing of a short movie on Reagan, surely we can get at least some attention and maybe get Blitz and a few others sent to FOX, where they belong!

Lou Dobbs is the only show on CNN that is worth watching. In my opinion we must go after the sponsors on CNN to have any real effect.

Edited on Fri Aug-13-04 12:05 PM by vetwife
Please call, fax, email, the following to voice your concerns over CNN's unfair slant to the right ! You may comment and use your own letter or use the talking points listed below or cut and paste one of the letters listed below. It is past time to make this virtual protest march on CNN and their unfair reporting tactics. Please do this to help Take Back the Media. This virtual protest is set for Monday, August 16, 2004 between the hours of 9AM ET and 4ETPM.
Please do this and make these contacts this day ! We will set up other virtual protests with other news organizations but the one Monday is for CNN. THE CNN VIRTUAL BLITZ !
....................................................................
TO: CNN

I want to begin telling you that I am an American and have turned to the Cable News Media for news regarding the upcoming election. The people who have used their positions to slant the reporting and specials are very obvious about their conservative
Slant on documentaries and interviews. I find that the old days of
Fair journalism has faded to the far right. There are so many examples, I could not begin to name them all. The “Born to Run” was a smear on the Kerry campaign. Even the
Title may have just as well been called “Born to Run Away”. This is disgraceful !
The Fair title should have been “Born to Compete”.

You have never missed an opportunity to use sound bytes that distorts the real message of the democratic candidate. You will never report any and there are many shortcomings or misspoken words of George W. Bush. You have not given updates on the state of health of the fine Admiral who recently had a stroke, but you have chosen to replace his news for John O’Neill from the Swift Boat Vets and to help promote his book
“Unfit to Command”.

Candy Crowley is very clearly choosing to campaign for George Bush on CNN and call it reporting the news. There is too much opinion and commentary and not enough news reporting. You assume that people cannot think without your input.

I long for the days of real reporting of the news without any input from paid pundits.
We the People are tired of this Fox approach that CNN has chosen to take in reporting the news. We are tuning out CNN and its sponsors as you clearly do not represent overall, all of the people.

Name (optional)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Or use this lettter and talking points:

Why is it that your news organization do not provide your audience with a more balanced view of Senator Kerry’s military experience in Vietnam? (EXPAND ARGUMENT) It would certainly seem that all of the “wires” which stream into your news organization would certainly have privy to such “news worthy” events such as the following:
"Ten Senior Military Officials Respond to Cheney's Latest Attacks"
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...
.....................................................................
More Talking points:

"talking points" -- here's Sheila Samples...

from her recent "open letter":

....And the bewildered "what does all this mean?" Judy Woodruff, whose questions are generally preceeded with vague non-attribution.
