Can I share with you the shallow politics of some coworkers today...?

Perhaps this is lounge material but it says the lounge is for nonpolitical stuff. But UGGH, I want to get this off my chest.

In 2 days I've heard this elevator talk from various people:

1) Oil is over $45 per barrel? "It's all because 'those tree-huggers won't let them drill in Alaska".

2) A couple thousand gay marriages nullified by the California Supreme Court? I say "a lot of disappointed people".. Elevator woman says "they never should have been allowed to do that in the first place!" (Okay, she's entitled to her opinions, but I'm disgusted that anyone thinks that 'banning gay marriage' solves anything. Where's the compassion? At least people ought to be willing to recognize basic human issues that are affected by this, like health insurance or hospital visitations or adoption of orphaned children that you've helped raise or whatever.)

And finally, the worst:
3) Oil is over $45 per barrel, war in Iraq is a nightmare..Someone says they'd like some GOOD news for a change, like oil dropping below $30 or the war in Iraq being over. Another woman says "yeah, well, if we can only have one, give us the oil price drop, please, that's what we really need". Uh..people are dying!! (Republicans: Nothing matters until it happens to THEM.) What's even more amazing is that she has a wonderful, almost-draft-age son.

Do these people really get to vote??
