Great Rolling Stone Article on O'REILLY (He Really IS Paranoid)

.... ...O'Reilly's poor impulse control is precisely what makes him so valuable to Fox News Channel. According to Rushkoff, O'Reilly's appeal to anger, emotion and opinion are not merely ratings-grabbing devices; they are part of a larger program of ideological coercion. "As the conservative-message machine geared up in the 1970s," says Rushkoff, "its strategy was to make the political landscape more emotional and less factual - galvanizing a new base of conservative support around hot-button issues. That's why Fox tries to replace news with opinion." ....

O'reilly comes by his anger honestly. Born in New York on September 10th, 1949, the eldest of two children of William and Angela O'Reilly, he was physically and verbally bullied by his father, William Sr. An imposing six-foot-three ex-naval officer, William Sr. was a frustrated, thwarted man who, despite becoming an accountant at a large oil company, felt he never reached his full potential, even after he bought a house and moved his family to the tranquil middle-class suburb of Westbury, on Long Island, when Bill Jr. was a year old. "He'd get into a fight at the drop of a hat," says an elderly Westbury neighbor who recalls William's hair-trigger temper. O'Reilly says his father took out his frustrations on his son, whom he yelled at for minor offenses and even at times punched in the arm. "There were times when my heart was black with the urge for revenge," O'Reilly has written about his late father. ....

But the picture that emerges of O'Reilly from talking to former colleagues at WFAA is very different. They accuse him of lifting stories from the newspaper and undermining newsroom colleagues. "In a business where there are a lot of reprehensible people," says longtime WFAA reporter Byron Harris, "he stood out as particularly dishonest, obnoxious, self-centered." ....

But Cullinan was sometimes troubled by his mentor's approach. "I helped him produce some stories," he says. "He would write the story before he did the interviews. Then he'd get the person to say what fit with his narrative." ....

After a year, O'Reilly got his big break, becoming a CBS network correspondent, filing stories for the CBS Evening News With Dan Rather. It didn't take long before controversy found him again. In June 1982, he was sent to CBS' bureau in Buenos Aires during the Falkland Islands war. Shortly after arriving, O'Reilly went to cover a story about a crowd of angry Argentines who had gathered in the streets. He was convinced he'd landed a scoop that would put him in a prominent spot on the evening news. But his bosses gave the story to CBS' star correspondent in Buenos Aires, Bob Schieffer -- a classic case of "big-footing," which one member of the bureau points out is "normal for young reporters. That's just part of TV news." But O'Reilly wouldn't stand for it. He reportedly threw a tantrum with his bosses in Buenos Aires and had an ugly confrontation with Schieffer. Within days of arriving, O'Reilly was kicked out of the bureau. "They literally sent him home," recalls one of the team members. ....

11. I agree. I expect to see him on a tower with a machine gun some day
Although I always thought he would make a great character in a psychological thriller novel...well known journalist by day, evil serial killer by night.

2. I think I remember Al Franken making fun of O'Reilly for a photo O'Reilly
Edited on Fri Aug-13-04 12:46 AM by Algorem
put in Parade magazine of O'Reilly and what O'Reilly said are 7 of his longtime friends. In the picture O'Reilly looked like he was walking by in the background alone while the other 7 were in the foreground together looking like they were friends with each other, not with O'Reilly. That was in a September,2003 Parade magazine and it's written about in this buzzlash.com article: http://www.buzzflash.com/contributors/03/09/23_oreilly.html Now,a few weeks ago O'reiilly had a big article in Parade about how he took 18 lifelong freinds to the Grand Canyon, blah blah blah and he puts this photo in there: of him and these "lifelong friends" of his.Now I've been wondering if he's so crazy that he set up this whole Grand Canyon trip just to get a photo like that because of how he was made fun of the year before for the other photo?I can't believe he has 1.8 "lifelong friends",much less 18.Maybe they're cardboard cut-outs or something.

13. hahahaha
the body of the article, about good guys, has strings of descriptions like those below, revealing his real intentions: getting back at those he really hates:

"The article is mostly about how awful people are: "weasels," "pond-scum," "selfish jerks," "the worst person this side of Saddam Hussein."

and this

''The theme of betrayal, coupled with the obsession with "despicable people," "selfish, manipulative people," "untrustworthy people," mixed with the odd assertions that he is from Levittown (not true) and has friends (questionable from this article), leads me to think that Al Franken has inadvertently managed to drive O'Reilly out of his mind.''

4. Another typical nazi from a typical nazi background.
O'Reilly is nothing but a pathetic little man that is paid to lie for his sustenance.

AL FRANKEN: Well, it isn't just that Bill O'Reilly claims he won a couple of Peabody Awards. Whenever he was asked about Inside Edition and it being sort of a tabloid show, O'Reilly would indignantly say that they had won two Peabody Awards. Who says we're a tabloid show? And O'Reilly would offer as proof the Peabody Awards that Inside Edition had supposedly won. And he did this on a number of occasions. I got through watching him once on C-SPAN and then went researching on Nexis. I just followed it up because I couldn't believe that Inside Edition had won a Peabody. And I did the research. And, of course, they hadn't won any Peabody Award. I thought I would call O'Reilly, and that way he could stop saying the wrong thing, which any journalist would be embarrassed about. Instead of being grateful that I had called him, he just got angry. Well it turns out that Inside Edition had won a "Polk" Award a year after he left. And so he got very, very angry and said, "Go ahead – go after me, Al." And so I just thought that it'd be fun to do.

I gave the story to Lloyd Grove at the Washington Post, who called O'Reilly. O'Reilly sort of said, "Well, all I did was mix up a Polk and a Peabody, and Al has this jihad against me," et cetera. Now that's not necessarily worth writing about, but then I discovered that about a week later Robert Reno at Newsday decided to do a column about the fact that O'Reilly had claimed on several occasions to have won Peabodies and hadn't.

6. Good article.
But I was shocked to read that HE'S ONLY 54? Good god -- my dad was ten years older than that when he died, but easily looked ten years younger than O'Lielly. All that bile and rage must really poison a person.

Certainly was an illuminating story. I've noticed that even some people on the right don't seem to care for O'Reilly too much (Drudge seems to like pissing him off, for one), and now I can see why.

Will the author go on the O'REILLY circus and be whipped or will he refuse and be called a "coward"? Will O'REILLY call for a boycott of RS?-----Can't imagine that his cult followers buy RS anyway.

18. He wants to be PRESIDENT!
Edited on Sat Aug-14-04 03:03 PM by party_line
Yikes

snip>
Some are convinced that TV-pundit success is not enough for O'Reilly. "He has much higher aspirations," says Cullinan. Asked what those might be, Cullinan adds, without irony, "President." He pauses. "If you watch the show, you can see how he's positioning himself against Hillary Clinton. He's setting it up - just like he sets up guests on the show."

Preposterously implausible as this sounds, O'Reilly does not laugh it off. Quite the reverse. "Well, I'm flattered that somebody actually thinks I could handle the job," he says, his voice gone all plummy and pleased.
-------------

As though anyone had implied that they think he "could handle the job"! What a horrid person to try to have a convo with.

20. This I can hardly imagine (nor do I want to):
"But after a year there <Denver>, O'Reilly had become a bona fide star, and he gathered around himself a coterie of awed, mostly younger reporters. Bob Cullinan, a twenty-three-year-old from Nebraska, was one of them. Cullinan says that O'Reilly cultivated these "disciples" who included fellow reporters Joe Spencer and Michael Scott. After work, the four of them would hit the local dance bars, where O'Reilly was clearly the alpha male on the party circuit. "I was like the original James Bond," he says."

O'Liely at a dance bar??? AAAAAGGGHH!! Run, run, just run away! His Splotchiness is in the House! Hide your daughters!
