12. I turned Mike off. :(
I'm really really bummed out about something he said.
And if I mention it, even here if I mention it, I'll be flamed. It's a subject I find to be extremely important. And it's a subject I've tried to talk about here, and had poor reception. Noone wants to take responsibility for it. And as such, to target one solitary person, is tantamount to insanity, or unfairness. But I'm affraid I lost a HUGE amount of respect for Mike tonight. He, like so many appear to not get it, even though I'm thrilled with happiness for his political stance. Oh well. I'd love to talk about it, but I'm not willing to battle those who don't understand. So I'll just post this, and leave it at that.

26. I'm risking my future at DU by saying this
He's a breeder. Damnit! It's something I cannot overlook. Anything, and everything we do with politics is all for naught if we don't have the brains to look forward and leave a world for the future. Five grown kids and an infant is just plain stupid! That means, he is willing to accept a world of 18 billion people. I'm sick of being such a minority. Why do so few people see this? And why do so many get inflamed when it's mentioned? I have learned to ignore the flaming insults, as they usually come from those who are either defending their parenthood, or just don't understand. So, I'll probably stop posting here as well, now. I'm tired of wasting my time and energy. I feel like I'm flogging the wind. Very few people see this HUGE issue.

35. You may be onto something
Hell, if we all quit procreating, all of humankind's problems will be solved. There won't be any humans to have problems.
Sorry for the sarcasm, but I think it's a pretty fanciful leap of logic to assume that if a person has six children, he or she aspires to multiply the world's population by six. That's a little too existential, don't you think?
I used to worry about stuff like this when I was taking lots and lots of LSD.

49. I suppose so.
I guess when you study math for years, in college, and see just how extreme the problem is, it adds to the effect of just seeing fields turn to concrete, and millions of cars flowing to work every morning, and houses popping up everywhere like weeds. I'm a pretty open minded person, but this is the major driving force behind our problems. Of course there's greed, and rascism. Different magnitude altogether. This ecclipses all that we discuss here. It IS a leap in logic for me to make my assumption. You're right. But there isn't time left to continue waiting. I've just watched a major portion of the forests where i live, going down the highway on trucks. Someone wanted a piece of lumber. Just one. And another, and another. And that's how it goes. So I'm not sure how big a leap in logic it really is. You know, I'd love more than anything to be wrong. But I've seen the results. They're real. I could go on, but it's just not the right forum for this. And of course I wouldn't want to ruin the fun of some of the happy go lucky posters here. There are a few who see it, but it seems that most don't even want to think about it. It's just that I care. I could just ignore it. Let the future deal with no trees, and overcrowding. But that is so irresponsible. Anyways, thanks for your reply. I appreciate people who don't take advantage, and flame.

But mostly, I love MM! I don't remember what he said to tee me off, but it was bad enough that I jumped off his link for a couple of weeks earlier this year. I don't like hearing him dog Dems, though.

As far as him being a breeder, to each his own. Yeah, I think population control is a bigger issue than people are willing to admit, but he's not the only person involved in that decision. I don't know if people here are going to "get it" until they feel completely run over.

My husband and I are visiting a city this weekend that we lived in twenty years ago. We can barely get around, the streets are so crowded. And it isn't from a growing business base, it is simply population growth from reproduction. Makes me want to go find a patch alone in the middle of nowhere for just ourselves.

I guess I don't quite understand. If you feel the earth is getting overpopulated, I agree with you. I can't possible bring myself to support population control. Most people I know do not want nore than 2 children because they realize they can't afford more than that. If people can support their children, and mentaly deal with raising more than 2, how can you or I decide that they can't?

Convince me that I'm wrong.

52. There isn't anything we can do.
It's the same as being kind, or honest. Some people don't think about anything but themselves. That's where the problem lies. I'm more concerned about those who will have to live with our landfills, than satisfying my desire for having children.

I would imagine that having a law limiting families to two children might not be overly confining. But other than that, I would condemn any controls on people's lives.

And I apologize for this threadjacking.

60. No. But talk about a coincidence.
That told me a lot. I believe that caller was feeling the same way.
The human race is not endangered. Not by any means. Furthermore, when people have children, they are bringing more people into OUR lives as well. They ARE affecting our lives. We DO have a right to ask, and say things.
I have to say, I needed to hear that.

By the way, you might notice that I had turned him back on again. I want to get over my own emotions, and here what he has to say. Because everyone does have their good and bad sides. And he is good. I just don't like a part of his life. And I really don't even know the whole story. And it's not my right to investigate HIS life. Not to that extent, at least. Well, enough. I just don't want to drag this down with negativity when he's got so many GREAT things to rant and rave about.

64. I know I said I wouldn't say anymore on this about that........but....
I'yam ;-) so shoot me :P

I see and feel your passion about this very real concern. I do. I have watched and personally felt the effects of well, just too many people. I've been acutely aware of the coming of 'critical mass' for the better of 2 decades. We all have our pet issues that we are passionate about. This one happens to be higher on your list and even though many are aware of the problem, it obviously isn't as high on their lists as it is yours. We all can't fight the same cause because then other causes suffer from neglect. There's a balance to be had. I also have a lot of faith in Mother Nature and her ability to strike her own balance. We are overdue for a massive plague that will no doubt wipe out a great percentage of the Earth's population. It's only a matter of time. History has shown us that many times.

Now, as far as Mike being a "breeder." Okay, let's just say for a moment that's true and we'll also put aside the offensive term, "breeder." This newest child in Mike and Kathy's life is as we know not Mike's first but his sixth. But this is Kathy's first and only child. Now, if Kathy had not married Mike she would have, more than likely, married someone else and she would have, again more than likely, had at least one child and possibly more with that husband. So, if Mike had not married Kathy he with great probability would not have had any more children but she, Kathy, would have anyway with another husband.

So now I ask you, how is it that Mike is guilty of being a "breeder?"

67. No. That's ok.
I'll talk all day about this. I've been watching it with frustration for over thirty years.

This IS high on my list. That's a good point. I choose to pay attention to it. Or rather, I find it hard not to. After all, just about everything I like has been essentially ruined by the increase in population. But that's another book. I also have great faith in Mother Nature. I'm actually more concerned about the lives that people will live while we do our damage. I've suffered incredibly due to the growth of the human population. I've watched nearly everything I loved, die. It's real. I also understand that like any system with feedback, there is a point where equilibrium will be restored. I find it extremely sad that humans won't take control before a crisis demands it. It is high on my list because I don't want to see a massive plague. That's what I'm talking about. Not because I don't like children, or people who have lots of kids. It's because I don't want the ice caps to melt, or millions of people in Africa to starve, or horrible diseases to spread through billions of people. Of course some of this is inevitable. But there are limits. Limits that should not be ignored. Or we all will suffer.

Breeding, to me, means increasing the population. Zero population growth is essentially two people to replace two people. Breeding is anything more than that. And without any real objective maximum number of people that the planet can sustain (since it involves so many factors) it can be argued just when breeding is a problem or not. But without a doubt, six billion people is far far too many. Some say one billion was the maximum sustainable number. Being exponential, when we get into this number, the ramifications are extreme. I mean, frightening. It takes a good understanding of mathematics to be able to really see that. But it doesn't take much more than eyes to see the results.

68. I hear you and understand what you're saying.
I know it and I believe a great many people see it and know it too and yet feel powerless to change it. Every sentient being has the Earthly right to procreate. Should we? I mean have the responsibility to decide not too? Well that's each individuals own call to make. Not by any outside entity or law. I find that as offensive as someone telling me I can not terminate my own pregnancy. Awareness, educationeducationeducationeducation, birth-control and legal abortion (among lots of other things) are easier to promote and change versus trying to shame and blame or impress upon folks why they should not "breed." Did I mention education? ;-) That's so important. I know I don't have to tell you :-)

But I think it may be more helpful to the cause to change a few terms and words that automatically turn people off and manage to at the same time, turn on their anger and defenses thus completely blinding them to the message which is the important part we wish for them to concentrate on. The Message. I've seen it here a gazillion times. I knee-jerk sometimes too  I'm not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. But people seem almost eager at times to 'take-on personally' any and every issue under the sun even when it is not theirs to own. It's hard for people to remove themselves from the equation and not take-on personally some questions, words or situations facing us. Then the message gets lost in the sea of 'me.' Takes practice and conscious effort to remove ourselves and not take something to heart. We get in our own way. But there in lies part of the trick to opening eyes and ears and raising awarness on both sides. **Seeing clearly what we dislike in others is usually what we dislike within ourselves. Once we acknowledge that, the rest will follow.
(disclaimer: **with the exception of freepers) ;-)

There I go off babling again

69. What a wonderful post.
I've learned during my short stay at DU, that it does take effort to carefully get the message to people so they can hear it clearly, without emotional distortion.

The examples you list as means of enabling people to see the problem and decide for themselves is very important. I keep forgetting that aside from just plain being obvious, I became frightened when I saw the exponential curve of population versus time. Hey, I just remembered something- There's a story of someone who said they'd give a guy a penny, and then each day he'd double the amount he gave him, for 30 days. It's an exponential, like population growth. The point is that offhand, it wouldn't seem like much money. But even with a penny, after 30 days, it amounts to tens of millions of dollars.

I have a giant problem keeping my head out of other people's lives when it affects mine. For example, I want to drive to the store. But think about this- you are going to breath what comes out of my exhaust. The more flagrant my driving habits become, the more of a reason you have to ask me why I'm polluting YOUR air. A child requires an incredible array of commercial items. It wasn't so bad to have kids before. But now, it's a disaster.

I really appreciate your posts. And I'm somewhat embarrassed, since people don't want to hear about this, but I've decided I can no longer remain silent.

But Mike ain't for everyone. If it makes ya feel any better, if we all listen to Mike long enough he'll eventually get around to pissing everyone off at one time about one thing or another. He has disappointed me more than once. And speaking for me and ME ONLY (this is not aimed at you in any way), but speaking for myself, I chose to get over myself (I know that comes off as rude but I really don't mean it to be). I agree with Mike more than I don't.

Be well and take care :-)

40. This is mid-terms all over again.
We will NOT win by being BUSH-LITE. We will not win by trying to appease these right-wing nuts. There IS NO appeasing them. They don't ever try to compromise. They want to destroy anything in their pathway and have total power and control. It is SICKING that time and time again we bend over backward to give Republicans what they want when it goes against the interests of the American public.

48. Saying some of the Dem politicians are more concerned with keeping their
jobs rather than protecting the interests of the American people.

Preach on. He is telling it like it is. I am so glad he's back on the air.
