Far and away the best political book in recent memory:
Currently #10 on the NYT Non-Fiction Hardcover bestseller list.

Could just as well be titled "What's the Matter with America?" -- a question most of us here have been asking every day. Absolutely go pick up a copy if you want to understand how we got here and where we're going.

2. i saw the author on Now with Bill Moyers
he was excellent.

the premise of the book is why would people vote against their own best interests? and how the repubs used God, Guns and Gays to sway the populace

i look forward to reading it myself

3. If I remember from one of his interviews, and I saw a couple of
them and they were great, he said something like this:

You vote for "family values" and you get tax cuts for the rich
You vote "pro-life" and you get tax cuts for the rich
You vote for "protection of Marriage" and you get tax cuts for the rich
etc.

6. Read his article in Harpers or Mother Jones,
lays out the case of the populous movement in Kansas over the last hundred years or so, and how the Repub/Conservative movement has hijacked it via value issues, as a scam for various interest groups to obtain rural voters as a block to vote against their own economic interests. Advocates a return of economic populism as a plank in the democratic party. Critics view his case as a type of Marx's doctrine and believe that these voters are truly voting for the values represented by the Repubs/Cons.
Have yet to read the book, but reading that article, seeing the author on CSPAN, and hearing him on the radio I will do so soon.
My 2 cents.
