National Sales Tax: Another Neolib Scam

“You know, I’m not exactly sure how big the national sales tax is going to have to be, but it’s the kind of interesting idea that we ought to explore seriously,” said Bush the other day.

How big? 56 percent, according to Robert S. McIntyre. In other words, if a national sales tax replaces federal income tax, most of us would end up paying even more to the government. Can’t afford rent and food now? If the Republicans have their way, life for the non-rich will get worse under a second Bush administration.

It’s all about the rich paying even less and you paying more. For instance, the Bushites don’t think you deserve Social Security or health care. Bill Kitchen writes:

Federal Reserve is trying to help Congress destroy Social Security. All of these activities are part of their coordinated policy to create their ‘New Feudalism’ within the two Americas. First there will be a princely few on top who have trillions of dollars. Then there will be peasants, and serfs and wage slaves who will either die in the streets without healthcare or will grovel at the feet of their slave masters and beg for a chance to lick those nice new boots. For a Republican it will be a dream come true. For a Democrat there is always the ‘All Volunteer Army, where they can at least be fed, clothed and provided with health care—until they die for oil. At least their suffering will be over quickly. The rest will live under the New Feudalism.

2. Actually the better estimate is 23% - or 33% with leakage - higher only if
parts of consumption get excluded - like food and medicine!

3. Kerry is a neoliberal on free trade

however he spoke against a national sales tax the other day.

This article may be flawed because it insinuates Kerry would support a NST.

4. LATimes says Kerry's labor/envir requirements for free trade make him
less a free trader than Bush.
