Republican Party is starting to tear apart
This is good news!

http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?ID=13409&sd=08/17/04

A coalition of moderate Republican groups consisting of the Log Cabin Republicans, Republicans for Choice, and the Republican Youth Majority is calling on the Republican Party to adopt a "Party Unity" plank in the GOP platform before the national convention begins in New York on August 30. "We understand that Republicans of good faith can differ over divisive social issues; however, our platform should respect the diversity of this party," said Patrick Guerriero, executive director of the gay political group Log Cabin Republicans. "The platform of the Republican Party should represent all Republicans, not just those on the far right." The coalition's Party Unity plank reads: "We recognize and respect that Republicans of good faith may not agree with all the planks in the party's platform. This is particularly the case with regard to those planks dealing with abortion, family planning, and gay and lesbian issues. The Republican Party welcomes all people on all sides of these complex issues and encourages their active participation as we work together on those issues upon which we agree."

Whole story is worth a read.

3. The Republican coalition.
It was built on being outside. Now they everything they wanted and they fucked it up.

I see ugly shards all over the sidewalk. Who could put that bottle of hubris together again?

Can the Repubs keep the gays, the Fundies, the Paleo Conservs and the Neo Fascists from each others throats to pull off a united convention?

7. Social Conservatives
sooner or later the fundies and other social conservatives are going to wake up to the fact that they have been used by the corporate wing of the Republican party. The GOP controls all the levers of power now, White house, House, Senate, Supreme Court & the media, but are the fundies and bigots getting what they want (banning abortion, homosexuality, immigration, secular government)? not really, that would be bad for business.

Once the realize that the GOP is not going to give them what they want the coalition will crack. The fundies & other bigots will have to form their own party but of course they will still not get what they want because they are still represent a minority opinion.

9. And yet....
If such a thing actually HAPPENS, the Republican party would emerge as the stronger party.

If the Republican party became known as the "inclusive" party for all those who benefit from tax breaks, the Dems would be in BIG trouble.
