What is total # AND % of Florida Nat. Guard deployed out of state?
Edited on Tue Aug-17-04 07:00 AM by Divernan
I may well have missed this information on DU or elsewhere in the media, but I would like to see some official hard numbers in the forms of comparative columns for each and every state - detailing the total number of National Guardsmen/women for each state, and breaking down the total number/percentage of said guardsmen/women available for emergency duty within the state, as opposed to being deployed full time outside of their home state - whether in Iraq, Afghanistan or anywhere else. For example, aren't national guardsmen/women on full time duty throughout the US and elsewhere so that regular enlisted can be sent to Iraq/Afghanistan?

Heads up to any lurking journalists - this would be a helluva story, but hey, you'd have to do a lot of research and make a lot of phone calls - instead of just repeating opinions and rumors.

ON EDIT: It would also be interesting to find out if National guards from red states got safer assignments - their families would still suffer financially, but there would be no deaths/injuries to be covered in local papers and make the faithful question Bush's wisdom re Iraq.

1. Its not the numbers of people, its the experience and equipment.
The Florida National Guard has almost 4,000 soldiers available for Hurricane Charley, but these are raw recruits. More importantly, their equipment for providing water is being used in Iraq.

You are right to be concerned about the kind of help that the guard can give to Charley's victims.

4. The source...
I've been following this since Sunday. I know that this response is nothing like the response that was made for Hurricane Andrew. At that time, the military was home and provided incredible assistance to the victims.

however, "raw recruits" was literary license

The source...

Failing grades go to:

1. FEMA, the government loan people. 2. John Ellis Bush (JEB, the corporate Governor of Florida). 3. The untrained and unequipped remnants of the Florida National Guard. 4. George Walker Bush, the non-elected and appointed U.S. President. 5. Recycling firms who are stealing aluminum siding from destroyed mobile homes. 6. Those selling bags of ice for $10. 7. Thieves from Miami taking personal belongings from demolished homes. 8. Those thieves demanding money up front to file fake insurance claims.
