DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney's questioning of John Kerry's war record and his ability to protect America is "cowardly," Sen. Tom Harkin said Monday.

"It just outrages me that someone who got five deferments during Vietnam and said he had 'other priorities' at that time would say that," said the Iowa Democrat, a former Navy fighter pilot.

Harkin said he had seen clips of the vice president saying in Iowa last week that Kerry lacks a basic understanding of the war on terrorism.

He accused President Bush and his vice president of "resorting to dirty attacks on John Kerry's war record."

"They're running scared because John Kerry has a war record and they don't," said Harkin. "What he (Cheney) is doing and what he is saying is cowardly. The actions are cowardly."

called cheney a 'Chickenhawk' on the floor of the Senate. He also had a poster of a 'chickenhawk' on display. Yes, Please contact Senator Harkin with your thanks and appreciation. They need to hear from us.

I wrote him and thanked him and receivd this reply:


"Thank you for expressing your support for my April 28th speech on the Senate floor; I appreciate your support.

I made my "Chickenhawk" speech because I am sick and tired of people who never answered the call to duty defaming John Kerry - a true patriot - as weak on defense. That is preposterous. When the call came to defend our nation's interests, John Kerry answered the call and he has served our country ever since.

You can rest assured that I will continue to fight against the Bush campaign's nefarious attempts to discredit Senator Kerry as he campaigns for President. Considering the current issues to address, including the instability enveloping Iraq, skyrocketing budget deficits, and staggering unemployment, I am not surprised by President Bush's attempt to redirect attention to issues 30 years past. Nevertheless, I will continue to respond publicly to these mean-spirited attacks against Senator Kerry.
