Poll question: Confederat flag sporting democrat supporters
Edited on Tue Aug-17-04 10:29 AM by lojasmo
I put a lawn sign in the yard of a guy with a confederate flag on his jeep. What do we think?

3. Wait wait wait a minute....
He has a confederate flag on his truck, and you live...in Minnesota?

There seems to be no logic behind this...

4. People outside the south misunderstand that flag.
It's not a link to racial bigotry (although some bigots may have them), nor is it a link to the glorious past of a war they lost. Rather, it's a declaration of independence, that nobody's going to tell the guy who displays it what to do. It's a symbol of bravado, not repression.

It's also fairly useful as a twit indicator, especially when it's displayed outside the south.

7. It represents a way of life the blacks would like to forget.
YEah, it's racist because of what it represents to them.

15. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way as a person who
decided to put the Nazi swastika flag on their jeeps, too . . .

I mean, it's just a bit of history, right?

25. As long as you are speaking about history...
The Stars and Stripes flew over more slave ships than the Confederate flag.

Just some perspective.

5. In Minnesota?
I've met some people in the south who just don't get it. They are Democrats but see the confederate flag as a symbol of rebellion and regional pride. They refuse to concede that it's about racism/slavery and haven't fully realized just how offensive it is to many people.

You can blame those people for being clueless about it, and probably being racially insensitive, but that doesn't mean EVERY person who has one is a racist...just most of them. So, who knows.

10. Didn't we just have an angry thread about stereotyping like that?
STOP IT! Yes, there are conservative Southern Democrats.
There is also the Highlander Center in Knoxville Tennessee that was a central training ground for labor and civil rights activists from the 1940's on.
There are a lot of good liberals in the South so please give it a rest, unless that was just flamebait.

11. It's just a coined term
Southern Democrats are usually more culturally conservative. Just like Northern Republicans are usually more moderate.

talk to them; "my black friend..." note the singular.

for the nueva fascisti:

racism=BAD(don't get caught)
homos=TARGET LOCK!

EDIT: thread's getting confusing; this was ref to R/As southerners w/the flag but aren't racist. NOT about southern democrats.

14. I must admit, I didn't undersand the problem with the Confed. flag
at all when I moved from Pa. to SC in 1987. I really believed it was just a lot of people who had relatives who fought in the civil war, and they were memorializing them. I remember how shocked I was when I took a walk in downtown Greenville on a Sunday afternoon, just to see what it was like. Nobody was on the streets and I think my car was the only one parked anywhere. I can to a side street, and glanced down the alley to make sure it was OK to cross, and there was a dirty white water fountain on the side of the building that had a big sign "COLORED ONLY". I had never seen anything like that before, and I just turned around and went back to my car in disgust. A few months later, there was an announcement on the radio that the KKK was having a rally, just up the street from where I worked. I always worked on Saturdays, but I refused to go in that weekend. I thought the KKK was long gone...something you read about in the history books, like the Roman Empire or something.

I now live in Ga. It doesn't seem as racially biased here as in SC, but it's still there.

There really is a difference between "Yankees"" & "Southerners". I guess I am still a Yankee, and ashamed of my southern neighbors sometimes.

21. The slavery was a disgrace
But there were other valid issues the south had against the north. Slavery was just a piece (and a nasty one at that) of the whole argument.

28. Bullcrap
I have a history book from 1895 and in that book they don't call it "The Civil War", they call it "The Great Race War". Not one damn word is said about "state's rights" or any other reasons.

I believe the people who lived around the time the Great Race War happened, not historical revisionists who come around 140+ years later.

16. Didn't Dean say we should go after these folks also
These are the type of people that really get hurt by Bush*'s policies and we should not write them off just because they have a Confederate Flag. Once we get them in our camp we can work on the flag issue. Right now we need any and all voters to vote for Kerry and the Democrats. Let's not miss the forest because of the trees.

24. In MN
most likely it's some kind of ass wipe that has that flag on his truck.

In the south, they can play the "heritage card" and it holds some water (though I think it's still a way of intimidation)...but hey a vote's a vote, and it's important to get all sorts of people to vote for ya...though I wouldn't be chasing people with confederate flags. I wouldn't feel too comfortable around such people as I'm not white enough.
