FL hurricane disaster relief under Bush I helped defeat him ... what's the
effect on Bush II going to be??????

There were terrific problems in the aftermath of the FL hurricane toward the end of Bush I's term.

1. Bush II was a little more proactive than Poppy.
I don't know that it'll help him that much, but it sure as hell won't hurt him.

6. Well I don't know about that - it's still early and from what I have heard
there is some restlessness and stories about lack of security resulting in widespread looting. Apparently there are not enough National Guard units deployed (Now I wonder why THAT would be). My feeling is that it is unlikely this will help Bush - presidents are expected to help out when disaster hits - and there is a good possibility it will hurt him if the perception is that the recovery effort is badly managed or that the Iraq deployment has resulted in a shortage of National Guard units.

3. Do you think that could be why official death tolls appear to be lower
than eyewitness accounts? Or why Jebby and Shrub keep pointing out how well they did in preparing everybody?

Shrub may look dumb, but that's just a disguise. He very likely remembers all about Hurricane Andrew and its effect on Poopy's re-election chances.

4. Watch Out.....

Jeb on thursday was already spouting 15 billion buckerooos even before Charley was inside US Airspace and was set to hit Tampa and before I forget it was only a CAT2.

On Friday afternoon Jeb was asked what sort of damage $$ estimates would be now that it was upgarded to a CAT4.....Jeb said 15 billion again.....

Now a Cat 2 is far more severe than a Cat 4 and the population structure it hit was far different than Tampa....it seems as though Jeb is set on 15 billion.......

Id say we better watch the check that George signs for Jeb......somthing is smelling like 3 day dead fish...

5. I think Cat 4's are much more severe than Cat 2's.
But I get your overall drift. Interesting...

12. Andrew was a 5. Incredible.
Is it impossible to build houses with basements in FL? Or just impractical?

Clinton's FEMA.

Under Clinton, it became a dynamo for disaster relief.

11. Why isn't the death toll controversy big news??
I know I know...right media and all but there must newspapers out there willing to investigate it... I was shocked when I read that early morning claiming 400 deaths... Most are probably migrant workers since it hit the orange groves but come on...report this!!!!

14. I think the migrant worker thing may be the key.
I've read that Punta Gorda and surrounding areas were populated by retired folks on fixed incomes. But is it possible that there were many migrant workers, or undocumented people, who maybe wouldn't be missed by anyone if they were dead? Maybe no relatives would report them missing for fear of being deported? Maybe entire migrant families died, and there is no one to claim them? I read in another post on DU that this was the case when Andrew went through in 92.
