Book Publishing Report

Penguin Group (USA) will call its new conservative imprint Sentinel when it launches next fall.
The imprint, which will be directed by publisher Adrian Zackheim and editor Bernadette Malone, will publish right-of-center books on politics, public policy, culture and international affairs.
"We will work with a very focused media and a very identifiable core of authors," Zackheim said. "It's all about focusing your attention on areas of strength."
Zackheim will also continue serving as publisher of Portfolio, the Penguin business book imprint he founded.
Sentinel plans to publish 12 to 15 titles a year. The first five titles will be released in late 2004. "...

Now, the largest and less ideologically driven publishers are trying to cash in on the growing number of conservative readers when overall book sales have been flat.
Crown, which is part of Random House, and Penguin have hired editors from Regnery for their new conservative imprints. And Bookspan plans to start an as-yet-unnamed conservative book club early next year to compete with the 39-year-old Conservative Book Club, owned by Regnery's parent company.
"The center of the culture has moved to the right," says Crown vice president Steve Ross, who sees conservatives as "a vast and historically underserved readership. Publishers are catching up."
