Welp, found out I'm getting laid off...
at the end of September. I work customer service for a telecommunications company who also outsources to foreign countries where people will do my job for a quarter what I'm paid.

The needling part of it was listening to the radio on the way home and hearing someone ranting that if Kerry gets elected and "raises taxes on business" how the business will be "forced" to outsource.

Well, we tried it Bush's way and companies are outsourcing.

Economy's bad, we need to cut taxes.
Economy's good, we need to cut taxes.

I just can't wait for all these jobs that business were eager to create once they got their tax cuts.

Makes about as much sense as, "You're hungry, so I'm going to feed these rich people so they can afford to buy food for you."

1. "...buy food so they can let you watch them eat it ..." is more like it

Sorry to hear about your outsourcing.. That might be a new job avenue, actually...for a marketing genius.. Outsourcing parties.,.along with cards, paper plates, balloons..

Someone with a savvy approach could get a bunch of people together who have been outsourced.. Call the media...and get some attention :)

Like a bridal shower... An outsourcingshower..where the guest of honor get a thorough hosing...

It could include a lifesized cutout of the boss or Bush or whoever.. with a Pin the "pile 'o crap" on the asshole :)

and name badges with names like...Sanji...Hakim...Anjour...Endira.. etc..

The Indian outsourcing pplaces make them go by American names.. like Jeff & Tina & Susie

Yes, that's always amusing. I transfer to someone named "Steve" whose user id (based on name) is anajiliminila12. The funny part is the 12...meaning there are TWELVE of them with the same name.

They all have Western names though. I'm sure there's a classified corporate document listing the names they can adopt.

Nothing against my human coworkers in other countries; they deserve to work the jobs they are offered, and I assume that what they are paid probably qualifies as a decent wage there.

Many of the customers I talk to will refuse to speak to someone outside the country when I try to transfer them to a new department. "Are you transferring me to India?" is a common question, and we're not allowed to tell them anything but we work in a "global" call center. And it's random. I never know where exactly a transfer is going.

2. Sorry to hear about that
Yeah that trickle down economics is bullshit.

May you find a job making more money than you were and have happiness to boot.

3. Sorry this has happened to you. Under shrubco you can have
"ownership" of your own unemployment. Sigh. Good luck in the hunt.

4. Welcome to the Bush economy
By the way I worked in India last year where we couldn't import anything because of India's 67% import tax. Plus factor in no pollution controls, exploding population at a billion plus, and everyone is desperate to make a few rupies any way they can. How is this a level playing field?

Anyway, welcome to DU. You're in very understanding company.

5. Sorry
You could always take Bush's advice though - you need to get re-educated. Feel better?

Yeah, the mostly unemployed Ohio crowd seemed to be nonplussed, as well. I'm praying for you and your job hunt.

7. Wow. And I thought I was angry.
I'm really sorry to hear about that. It makes me angrier than I already am, and I'm already pretty angry. If that happened to me, I'd be just nuts with anger.

But hey -- Bush campaign workers would tell you "dude, just take some Prozac!"

8. Both Of My Parents Have Been LAYED OFF Since Bush Came To Office...
Don't EVER let ANYONE say that voting doesn't count! Or that there is no difference between the 2 parties.

10. I'm so sorry you're being laid off.
My husband lost his job last year due to outsourcing also. Luckily, he found another one that is working out better for him.

Kerry wants to give tax breaks to companies that keep jobs here in the U.S.

It'll take some time but I think things will improve enormously under President Kerry.

11. I am in the same boat, Jay
I'm running a mainframe and almost all the SEs I call are in India and Brazil. It is absolutely sickening what is happening.
