Charley roars in, but no KATHERINE HARRIS to be found
this is a beaut.

For Immediate Release 18 August 2004

Harris in Europe While Charley Battered District
Harris skipped 28 flights home to Florida while on Euro-holiday
Her response: "I've never been a press hound"

Rep. Katherine Harris' district contains some of the counties hardest hit by Hurricane Charley - Charlotte, DeSoto and Hardee. Leaders from the President to Florida's Attorney General toured the enormous damage endured by 13th District constituents over the weekend, but there was one notable exception - Rep. Katherine Harris.

According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Rep. Harris was in Europe when Hurricane Charley first hit her district on Friday, and she didn't tour the devastation until Tuesday. Rep. Harris says she was attending a family wedding in Sweden and cut her trip short when she heard of the destruction. But why did it take her four full days to assess the damage in her district?

ü On Thursday (five days before Harris toured her district), portions of Sarasota County were evacuated.

ü On Friday (four days before Harris toured her district), Hurricane Charley made landfall.

ü Between Friday and Monday Harris missed 28 opportunities to fly home

When asked why she couldn't make it back to tour her district for four days, Rep. Harris replied, "I've never been a press hound."

"Katherine Harris' claim that she's 'never been a press hound' is laughable, but there's nothing funny about the devastation suffered by her constituents while she was off in Europe," said DCCC Communications Director Kori Bernards. "I guess Rep. Harris doesn't understand that Members of Congress aren't being 'press hounds' when they tour damage in their districts after a natural disaster - they are doing their jobs.

"Rep. Harris skipped dozens of opportunities to fly home after Hurricane Charley hit. Now, the voters will decide whether Rep. Harris was doing her job by waiting four full days after the hurricane before checking on her constituents."
