This week's NOW w/ Bill Moyers - Lou Dobbs re: exporting jobs, more...
From devout capitalist to crusader for America’s workers, CNN’s Lou Dobbs has been transformed. “It's as if whatever made Linda Blair's head spin around in ‘The Exorcist’ had invaded the body of Lou Dobbs,” wrote THE WALL STREET JOURNAL about his opinions on exporting American jobs and his calls for a balanced U.S. trade policy. “This is insidious, it is spreading, it is absolutely dangerous in every respect,” he says. Bill Moyers sits down with Dobbs for a candid look at what’s behind this change of heart of one of the most respected names in financial news reporting. Dobbs is the anchor and managing editor of CNN's LOU DOBBS TONIGHT and he anchors a nationally-syndicated financial news radio report. He writes a monthly column for MONEY magazine, a weekly syndicated newspaper column and is a contributing editor for U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT. His new book is EXPORTING AMERICA: WHY CORPORATE GREED IS SHIPPING AMERICAN JOBS OVERSEAS.

1. Anybody with at least a half of a brain
could see this job outsourcing coming with the passage of NAFTA, WTO and other trade agreements. These agreements were never pursued to increase trade, per se. They were pursued to give trans-national corporations more flexibility to move labor and technology across international boundaries and face little resistance regarding labor and environmental laws of other countries. These agreements also enable trans-national corporations to exploit fluctuating currency valuations between countries. The cheaper your currency is relative to the U.S. dollar, the easier it is to export your goods from that country to the U.S.

The fact that these agreements are here despite their obvious objectives speaks volumes on how corrupt and stupid our elected officials have been.

his segment is a must-see!

"The middle-class deserves more representation in Washington, the corporate interests less". I can't believe Lou Dobbs said that.

18. Even from the standpoint of countries like China and India which
are benefiting from the outsourcing of jobs, it makes sense to keep the American middle class healthy and solvent because it is the demand for goods and services by the American middle class that is the driving force of the world economy. If this demand collapses, where would these outsourced services go?

7. This is encouraging.
It appears as of late that being a republican is like being a dinosaur. I am pleased to see more media types see the light. It warms the heart of this old lifelong Democrat.

9. Man, Lou Dobbs isn't backing down
I watched to see how committed he is to all of this. I thought maybe he was one of those 'corporate America should try to be a little fairer' kind of guys. No way. He is committed and adamant. He takes issue with the whole system. Corporations have simply outstripped capitalist ideology to him. He's taking some of the barbs that are starting to be directed at him and not only deflecting them, but ridiculing them and smashing them right back. No timid Dem here. He does seem like a serious ally to me.

10. Fantastic quote / truism Was read by Moyers
Alex Carey;

" ... the 20th century has been characterized by three developments of great
political importance: The growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power,
and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate
power against democracy."

Australian social scientist, quoted by Noam Chomsky in World Orders Old and New

17. Moyers and Dobbs.
We need about 100 more like them. I love Paul Krugman but he needs a slap to the head for his trade stance.
