Journalists: Idiots With Laptops (My E-Mail To CNN)
I have never done this (e-mailed a news outfit) before. They have crossed my 'line in the sand' of idiocy.

Subject:Journalists Are Truly Idiots

"In your lead-in to the oil price story, the anchor asks Ali Velshi (a CNN financial reporter) if there is any good news. Mr. Velshi responds that the good news is that nothing keeps Americans away from their cars, and the Americans have found ways to cut their spending in other areas.

How in the hell is this good news? When you have a essential price inelastic commodity like oil where demand is outstripping supply, the only way to moderate the price of the commodity is to reduce demand. All Mr. Velshi's 'good news' accomplishes is further stagnation of the economy by diverting money from goods produced in the U.S. into foreign oil, not to mention perpetuating our dependence on foreign oil.

The only good news is for Mr. Bush, Mr. Cheney, and the rest of the GOP petro-cartel that control our government, who stand to rake in massive profits on these permanently higher oil prices.

This sort of statement is the kind of idiocy I would expect from Fox 'News' or some other right-wing shill outfit, not from a formerly reputable news organization. Can you at least try to maintain some minimum standards, if for nothing else, at least for Lou Dobbs sake?

PS: Regarding the shill that said at $50/bbl drilling for oil everywhere will be profitable. Yes, it will be profitable, but it will not alleviate the future endemic problem with demand never equaling supply, since the increased production from these sources will never equal production from conventional (easy) oil resources that are in decline. Again, the oil men make money, and the rest of us become petro-serfs. With experts like this, it is no wonder that our national energy policy is in nonexistent."

2. Very nice indeed! Thank you for saying that just because
something is profitable for oil companies, it doesn't mean that it's good for everyone!!! (Huh?whazzat?)

In Texas, direct oilfield employment in 1980 was 1,000,000: today, it's 150,000. That is 85% of domestic jobs in the oilfield in Texas disappeared starting with Reagan. So even when oil companies make big bucks, that does not translate into US jobs - in this case, just the opposite.

Thanks.

3. Great response. That Velshi sounded like a real idiot. Does
he not realize that consumers make less trips to the mall when they cut back on spending to afford higher gas prices?
