A teacher told me this. We were standing in a room full of Latino and African-American middle school kids. I think a few heard this comment.

Fortunately, this person has been the exception. The vast majority teachers are the most loving, selfless people I have ever met.

9. Holy shit!
This sounds like my aunt, who, try as I might I can't get to vote at all. Former teacher in the Rio Grande Valley who developed a real resentment of the Latino kids she had to teach.

She hates Democrats and Republicans equally, and still talks about the liberal media.

She's past unreachable. She's on her own non-caring planet.

16. My father gave me insight to conservative thinking 25yrs ago.
Ronald Reagan was running for President, and he was - and still is - an ardent supporter.

Me, being an ignorant 15 yr old kid, asked Dad "How can Reagan promise to cut taxes & eliminate the deficit, too?" (Carter left an outrageous $20 billion - oh, those were the days!)

He said "We eliminate waste, and unnecessary programs." Some of those 'unnecessary programs' were the Dept of ED, and Dept of Energy.

Me: "But, there's not that much waste in the system. And the largest portion they can change is in defense, and Reagan wants to increase it! How can he increase spending and balance to budget at the same time? It doesn't make sense!"

Dad, getting sort of testy: "Well, you can if you do it right!"

......

Well, we all know he didn't do it right. And Bush Sr didn't do it right. And Bush Jr hasn't done it right.

17. That the attack and invasion of Iraq was revenge for Sept. 11
and this was said by someone who KNEW they had nothing to do with it. She went on to say the deaths of Iraqis made her "feel better" about the 3000 who died on Sept. 11. When I mentioned that we've most likely killed far more than 3000 Iraqis, she said, "well you know that's war." Said by a woman holding $50 a bottle whiskey in a cut crystal glass while sitting on a $1000 sofa in her expensive clothes in a home filled with laughter and joy. Yeah, she'd know all about war, wouldn't she?

I said all that to her. She looked hurt. (Good.) I felt sick. I put down my drink. I left. Went home and cried. What heartlessness. What complete and abject lack of feeling it took to say that. The really horrible thing is she really meant it.

The other most outrageous thing I have ever heard is I heard a frothing at the mouth bush supporter say the invasion and attack of Iraq "was a simple ratcheting up of tensions."

Whatever you have to tell yourself to sleep at night for supporting it, I guess. But I thought that rather cold-blooded, as well. Again said by someone whose life has never been in danger for a moment.

22. From my dad: "Hitler should have killed more of them."
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 09:37 AM by beam_me_up
My dad was an angry, depressed and oppressed working class man. Born in 1903, eighth grade education. Rural, not at all 'worldly.' This was in reference to a man the family knew, someone was telling a story about something he'd done. Dad said, "What do you expect? He's a Jew. Hitler should have killed more of them."

I was shocked, literally dumbfounded that my dad would say such a thing. I didn't know what to say that wouldn't erupt into yet another family argument (my dad and I barely spoke most of my life).

Mom interceded with this: "Now, dad, the Jews are God's chosen people; Hitler will burn in hell for what he did to God's people."

At least he couldn't say anything back to that and he knew it.

Edit typo

31. All great talking points
Worthy of a hardy laugh. :D
Yesterday a repuke who was doing some concrete for me was blasting Kerry on all the Vet stuff. Then blamed 911 totally on Clenis since he did nothing after the embassy bombings and W* only had 9 months to get his sh*t together.
He followed all of this up with stating that JFK was the first to start dipping into social security.
I was sort of giving him a pass, but when asked the social dipping thing, I stated that they all have. Maybe someone could help me with this since I was only 4 when JFK was murdered.
I also said that the current oil men were in tight with the Bin Ladens and Saudi Arabia. Of course my facts went unnoticed.
Oh yeah, on Clenis he said that Bill was too interested in getting BJs that he had no time for national security. I told him that Clinton gave us 8 years of peace and properity.
I don't think I made any progress because his head was way too thick.

45. We all gain by selective cutting in our national forests.
I'm still reeling. She actually said "this administration", when making her point that they would ease up and let us have the freedom to start logging. It will help everyone! Talking with a realtor yesterday, she actually said that. The key word is selective. There is no such thing as selective, in logging. You either bring the bulldozers in, or you leave the forest as a forest. Again, it's a simple post that I could turn into a chapter. But for brevities sake, I'll say that if she saw what I saw, she wouldn't say what she said. I mean, where the trees are majestic, it's very obviously a mistake. Where the forest is like a bunch of toothpicks, it's easy to think that logging is ok, even if it isn't. She just said that because either her family is in logging and she's been told it's ok, or something. I didn't know what to say, having never met her before. I just sat there, dumbfounded. I feel like it's hopeless. And I truely believe it IS hopeless.

This is a prevalent attitude in Eastern Washington (and elsewhere) and seems to be peculiarly associated with some secular 'western' LDSers. As one explained to me, God blesses those whose souls are 'good' by granting them success on earth. :eyes:

That kind of 'belief' permits all kinds of exploitation. I regard it as the most reprehensible of all, since it excuses racism, bigotry, and exploitation of those not lucky enough to be winners of the sperm lottery.
