Outsourcing and cheap jobs at home. Is it just greed or is it BY INTENT?
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 12:35 PM by HypnoToad
Peak oil.

The scare of oil prices.

Once things skyrocket in price, only the wealthy can afford the necessities.

We are left to die.

They know the game.

Meanwhile they support the warmongering policies and stripping of freedoms, making it harder for people to stand up for what they believe in. In today's "you are either with us" climate, and as it gets worse, anyone accused of being 'on the wrong side' might get summary execution. It's one less mouth to feed.

We're idealists when, in fact, there's no future and those in control are pressing home to ensure they are the winners in this war on compassion.

This is the reality we're facing.

Care to disagree? Please respond!

1. It's about GREED.

If the rich and powerful had to earn their money in an open and honest way, there would be a lot less of them.

2. But they're not and they're doing their best to make sure honesty fails.
Yes, greed is a part of it. Everybody wants money.

But there is more to it than that. How can they not know?

3. Intentionally greedy.
Sorry, I don't disagree with you. Their intentions have a lot to do with their greed. They're boxing us in, breaking us up into smaller and smaller groups - we're less powerful that way. Divide and conquer...

6. India outsource companies are going to outsource jobs to China
US companies outsource to India where workers are paid a percentage of what the job pay in US. Now India is going to subcontract some of those jobs to China where the labor is really cheap.

I'll try and find that link.

8. The race to the bottom
makes no sense. Whether it is by greed or intent, outsourcing is completely self defeating, especially considering that the world depends on the American consumer to drive the economy.

9. Disempowerment is more than greed
Contracting abroad gives the company much more powers over the
employees than were they domestic. Imagine being an indian employee
in a large accounting firm outsourcing the accounts of an american
outfit. Would you lose your job and be covered up if you whistleblew
over a crime like enron? It is the military maxim of keeping those
who are in the know, fewer, by dividing work to places without
the power to oppose.

As well, when the knowledge workers go overseas, the long term
education knowledge goes overseas as well. Likely, there will be
hardly any americans with core softare development/design skills in
a coupla decades as the deskilling takes further hold... then
the universities will decline, and people will start going to india
to get in to the computer software profession.

Its all part of the republican plan to turn us all in to walmart
workers without any power to oppose their treasonous plans to
dismantle and reduce american liberalism.

11. To a certain extent, this is already happening.I understand that
major schools like Harvard,MIT, Stanford etc.are already starting campuses in India to attract talent in Engineering, Design, Software and other disciplines. It is as though our children will not merely face competition from their classmates here, but will also be facing competition from equally well trained kids in India who will be willing to accept a fraction of their pay.Guess who will win? One other point: guess who will pay less tuition to get this education?

12. Have you ever read

the Conceptual Guerilla's take on "cheap labor conservatives"?

Here's a bit from his "Defeat the Right in Three Minutes":

"Cheap labor". That's their whole philosophy in a nutshell – which gives you a short and pithy "catch phrase" that describes them perfectly. You've heard of "big-government liberals". Well they're "cheap-labor conservatives".

"Cheap-labor conservative" is a moniker they will never shake, and never live down. Because it's exactly what they are. You see, cheap-labor conservatives are defenders of corporate America – whose fortunes depend on labor. The larger the labor supply, the cheaper it is. The more desperately you need a job, the cheaper you'll work, and the more power those "corporate lords" have over you. If you are a wealthy elite – or a "wannabe" like most dittoheads – your wealth, power and privilege is enhanced by a labor pool, forced to work cheap.

Don't believe me. Well, let's apply this principle, and see how many right-wing positions become instantly understandable.

Cheap-labor conservatives don't like social spending or our "safety net". Why? Because when you're unemployed and desperate, corporations can pay you whatever they feel like – which is inevitably next to nothing. You see, they want you "over a barrel" and in a position to "work cheap or starve".

13. For a while I thought this driving down of American wages would
be counterproductive to the corporations. But now I am beginning to think there may even be a method to their madness. As India and China industrialize and modernize, their combined population of 2.5 billion people will easily outstrip our own and the vast markets in these countries for cars,TVs,Household appliances etc. all producd with very cheap labor is making our corporations salivate and drool. The American worker, already marginalized by the predatory policies of the Republicans is going to be reduced to begging for a living wage. Our professional classes, starting with IT workers, legal help, radiologists etc.are beginning to see what outsourcing is going to do to their livelihood. As this Tsunami gathers momentum, no job is going to be immune to the downward wage spiral.
