What do I have to do to get my own radio show?!
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 08:58 PM by AlFrankenFan
This is more of an observation than plea for advice.

I'm talking about this:

I saw this in Barnes and Noble today. Before puking, I realized he was 13 when he got his own radio show. Probably unlike me, he had wealthy parents or some kind of advantage (like parents that know you exist) that would get him a show to voice his conservative opinion. Now I'm 14 and I have a blog, volunteer for Kerry, belong to the Young Democrats of Orange County, and volunteer for other organizations occasionally. I have tried to start to write a book but it's hard with school and extra activities I've wound up in. How do I really get a voice without it being smothered? What do I have to do?

1. Good question
but without rich parents and the right connections I suppose the best thing is to keep doing what you are doing and hope that eventually you get a break.

2. Go on Shortwave

You can buy brokered time from WWCR or several other stations. Alex Jones, for example, is on WWCR.

This Ben Ferguson fellow seems to be on satellite. Until now, I've never heard of him. I'm guessing his audience isn't that big.

WWCR stands for "World Wide Christian Radio." Nonetheless, to pay the bills, it sells brokered time. In other words, if you've got the money, they've got the time. I suspect you'll get a lot bigger audience on shortwave than you will on satellite. All you need is a telephone line and some money, and you can be on the air.

Buying Airtime on WWCR

WBCQ is another station that sells brokered time.

Let me see.... I've tuned my DX-392 receiver off "Little Steven's Underground Garage" and tuned it to 7415 kHz, which is WBCQ's frequency. I hear that Allen Weiner is on right now.

As a fourteen-year-old, you won't be able to sign a contract. I don't know how you're going to get past that.

3. Are there any college radio stations in your area?
If so, give them a call and ask if they're looking for volunteers. Who knows, you may just get your foot in the door!

4. Here's How
you'd have to pitch a station and start at the bottom - meet with the program director and see if they have any "late,late-night" hours available - unfortunately, they will not do this for free. You'd either have to find your own sponsors or pay for it yourself.

What sucks is most of these 1st attempt shows fade away - due to money -

Listen to the AM stations in your city and monitor what shows start say after 10PM - Mon-Friday - and on Weekends. ie: car show, finance, are they mostly syndicated - any local stuff at all.
