Poll question: The New Marine One
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 02:09 PM by LibLabUK
Should it be:

The US/UK/Italian Lockheed Martin US101

or

The US Sikorsky VH-92

It's worth noting Bush doesn't get a say in it.

Hybrid aircraft will be 'centerpiece,' he says after test flight

WASHINGTON - Navy Secretary Gordon England declared the V-22 a "centerpiece of future naval forces" after going for a ride for the first time in the tilt-rotor aircraft Wednesday.

....

Change of opinion

Mr. England's enthusiasm for the once-troubled Osprey marked a stark change from his cautious attitude toward the program last fall. In October, when the Osprey was in its fifth month of flight testing after being grounded for 17 months and redesigned, Mr. England said the V-22 program was "sensitive," if not "fragile."

Here's a link.

Must have lead contractors in a swing state....

11. From what I've read and seen..

including an interview with a DOD spokesman, the Lockheed is the better helicopter. The problem is that the Lockheed is a British-Italian design built under licence and although the majority of the manufacturing is done in the US, the blades are British-made and the gearbox is Italian-made. That is compared to the 100% US-made Sikorsky.

The winner of the contract supplies 23 Marine-Ones and another 130 to the US Navy. So it's a big deal.
