If I was "Born Again" would I become a Republican?
I've often wondered what it would feel like to become a "Born Again" Christan?

Would I worry myself sick over other folks souls?
Would I go Ga Ga over George W. Bush because he openly prays and uses Gods name in every speech?
Would I forsake the Soprano's for Touched by an Angel?
Would I Change my Florida License tag to a Choose Life Tag?
Would I give 10 percent of my wages (No OT) to the church?
Would I still drink St. Paulie's Girls or any alcohol?
Would I stop going to the Horse track?
Would all Kinky sex end?
Would I be banned from DU?
Would I oppose Abortion but support preemptive war?
Would I condone prejudice toward non-believers of the Son of God?

What would I become?

Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 01:39 PM by trumad
My inspiration for this thread is from a post earlier that said Stephen Baldwin is now a full on Born Again Fundie Republican. I'm trying to understand what happens to edit: most folks once they become er Born Again? Why do they jump to the dark side.

2. I'm afraid not. I'm "born-again" x20 years...
and I've never changed my mind about being liberal!

6. While I don't share your beliefs, at least...
you are consistent with the tenets of your faith by being a liberal. You are not a hypocrite, and for that alone, I respect you.

5. Jimmy Carter often said that he was a born-again Christian...
And look at all the good work he's doing for the world. He puts his brain and muscle into hard effort for peace and the betterment of all mankind. He is, IMO, a shining example of true faith.

7. But here's the deal
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 01:46 PM by trumad
Why do the majority of Born Againers get all crazy and forsake the good things in life...AND think that they've got to be a Republican?

9. Sometimes they call themselves
"born again Christians" when by definition they are "Fundamentalist Protestants." I am a born-again Christian and I did give up the "good things" in life to take up the truly miraculous things of the spirit. I can't explain the change that has come over me since I committed myself to Christ ... but it is real. I've voted straight Democratic in every election since 1972, and yet I am an evangelical Christian whose commission is to tell the good news. Dana ; )

10. I think this is a generalization
I'm all for an open and provacative discussion on the intersection between religion and politics, but I'm not sure this is the right place to have it.

12. A generalization?
I disagree... Giving up certain pleasures in life and then voting Republican is crazy to me... Now granted, as noted in this thread there are some who still hold thier liberal values to heart...BUT, there ain't many.

14. Well DU isn't exactly the friendliest place
for Born Again Christians, is it?

It could also be that we are using the term Born Again Christian in the place of "Fundementalist." After all my personal faith teaches that we should all be born again, yet at most fundementalist congregations my religion would be described as non-Christian.

And as for giving up certain pleasures in life, almost all religions and most moral systems hold that controlling your desires is better than letting them control you.

11. I am liberal and born-again
I have been for twenty years also. I am liberal. My mother is born-again and liberal. IMO it is hard to follow Christ and not be liberal. Conservatives have a large prescence in organized religion and the Fundies tend to have some of the more extreme prominate numbers but I think that is an actual politcal tactic that they have taken instead of a religious one. Afterall many of them preach that wealth is "our right" as followers of God. So much that is put out there is wrong IMO but since the people that say it are authority figures talking for God many of the rank and file do not question it.

IMO Liberals on the other hand are usually questioning everything. :)

13. you would only become all those things
if you completely surrounded yourself with all the right wing media, listened to faux, rush, all the other hate radio, pat robinson, falwell. You know, only if you decided to make your mind numb with rightwing spew and prayer. Not that there is anything wrong with prayer.

16. "born again" vs "fundamentalist"
I agree that there is a big difference between being a born again Christian and a fundamentalist "Christian".

This is probably a horrible thing to say, but I also think that some fundamentalist "Christians" are going to be in for quite a surprise when they finally do meet the Big Guy and learn they're not quite as righteous as they had thought.

18. All fundamentalists are 'born again', but
not all "Born Again" are fundamentalists.

I always like to ask this of the fundamentalist kooks who are pro-Bush (b/c of abortion and gay marriage): Who would Jesus torture?
That usually shuts them up for awhile.

20. Nope
You are confuzziling "born again" with "fundamentalism". A born again Christian is not necessarily a fundamentalist, although some are. And fundamentalists are not necessarily born again.
