3. That was not his fault! Lincoln had very little to do with the
forces that came before him.

10. Um I believe Jefferson Davis The Confederate President
ordered the first shots to be fired on Fort Sumpter (sp)

Haven't brushed up on civil war history in almost a decade but one thing I do remember is that the South fired the first shots.

12. The Confederacy started the Civil War
at Ft. Sumpter. We should learn from history what happens when a nation uses preemptive action (Lincoln was merely holding Sumpter, and only wanted to resupply the garrison when Beuragard started the bombardment which resulted in the fort's surrender).

2. I thing Teddy Roosevelt got us into
the Spanish American War. And I think the Korean War (or conflict) was Eisenhower's. If I'm wrong, someone correct me.

McKinley said we had to go to war to liberate the Phillipines to 'Christianize' the natives, who had been overwhelmingly Christian for several hundred years.

15. ...ah, Truman I would think.
Truman signed off on using Japanese and British troops to re-impose French rule. The first US casualty in Vietnam, was in September of the 1945.

18. No
The Spanish American War was over the revolution against Spain in Cuba. Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Phillipines were "spoils of war". In fairness, if the US had not taken over the Phillipines when they did, the Germans or the Japanese would have moved in. Given the track record of the Germans in Africa and China and the japanese anywhere they went, being an American colony was far preferable.

6. Well ....
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 06:38 PM by Trajan
MOST recent wars have been fought by Democrats ... True enough ....

Some of these wars, like Vietnam, creeped through a couple of different administrations before they became 'wars' ... others, like WWI and WWII, were resisted until resistance and isolationism became futile exercises ...

So: not many wars were 'started' by Republicans ...

The flip side of this: Democrats CAN and WILL defend their country when threatened: so claims to the contrary are explictly proven false ...

FDR and Wilson were strong war time Democratic presidents who didnt stand by and watch their nation get annihilated : there is no basis in fact for the GOP to assert that Democrats 'dont know how to defend america' ..... We in fact DO know how .....

They cannot have it both ways ...

13. Not apologizing for them ....
Just explaining the inconsistent memes

1) 'Democrats started most wars'

2) 'Democrats are weak on defense'

You cannot argue both points simultaneously ...

Wilson was also a blatant racist and questionable on the issues of personal liberaty and free speech ...

16. Actually what we should say is the Democrats
have learned from the past and realize that grabbing one's gun first is not always the best solution. This country does not need to have the Republicans go through that learning phase. The death of thousands of people could be avoided.

As for our wars, usually we democrats wait until there are no other options too. Remember we entered WWI at the end of it and we did not start WWII, they declared on us.

17. In my opinion.
Most wars are results of external, longer term conditions or actions that aren't totally attributable to a single president, if they are attributable to a POTUS at all.

Our most recent Gulf War seems to me to be an exception. While there were pre-existing conditions, the situation appeared to me to be contained before we started hostilities. This was a war fought due directly to choices by the Bush 43 administration.
