Smears work because.....
Someone tells a horrible lie about you....

1. you ignore it..(It MUST be true, or you would step up and refute it)

2. you vociferously deny it..(It must be true, or why would you respond so angrily)

Ordinary people do not understand the way propaganda works, because it is so insidious.. THAT'S WHY it works..

You can NEVER prove a negative to perfect satisfaction...

Prove that you have never molested a child..The mere "hint" that you "might have" is enough to ruin a career, a campaign, a marriage, a family....

Republicans are masters of this type of campaign.. PBS showed some Nixon stuff a few days ago..

Catholicism was a big story when he was running against Kennedy, and there was Tricky Dick...on camera....saying...

..."Some people would make an issue of the fact that Mr kennedy is a CATHOLIC, but I will NOT make an issue of it"...

and..

.."I do not believe that Kennedy would take orders from the Vatican, even though there has been some talk of that happening"...

This is not new...and it's not going away..

The way we lose elections, is to meekly stand by and "stay above the fray".. Once the "seed" is planted in the minds of the voters, there is no "easy" way to remove it.. That weed, must be ynaked out by the roots..

10. Nah...
Shrubya doesn't beat his wife.

Pickles beats *... we have the pictures to prove it. Every damn
time he screws up and goes down in the polls, the next vacation
to Crawford yields another "bike" accident or "pretzel" incident.
The the common injury is always a nice facial contusion.
Coincidence?

4. Although the media giving voices to lies goes a long way
people seem to eat up gossip. And if it's political gossip, all the better. We have unlimited chum for the sharks. I listened to some stupid show called the Church Doctrine yesterday on Air America yesterday. Then you realize that the callers aren't even paying attention to where the story has been going lately. The swiffer liars have been exposed but people call in saying how appalled they are that Kerry didn't earn his Purple Hearts. Why do you think 50% of the people still think Iraq was responsible for 9-11. They can only like gossip, lies, and smears, not the true story. That would be boring.

5. karl rove is the master of the lie n run... it worked with gore, but not
as well, so far, with kerry.

So far.

Kerry is having a hard time staying on top, answering to the lies without wasting time... Rove is a master gamesman.

8. We can do our part by laughing and calling it a "WILD CONSPIRACY THEORY!"
Yes, Kerry went to viet nam to get shot at and when he didn't he lied to get medals so he could never talk about them, until 30 years later, and then run for president.

Yep.

He's a hella planner that kerry!

12. I was a springboard diver in college
and I honestly can say this is the highest degree of difficulty dive I have ever seen. I think it only could be described as "reverse 3/4 face-plant and back-flop with a half twist", degree of difficulty 10.5. :-)

13. I don't think smears work
Especially in McCain's case, I don't think he lost because of the smears, I think republicans just wanted someone further to the right and they thought Bush was more electable at the time.
Same with Cleland, the people in Georgia probably wanted someone extreme right wing instead of him, despite the smears.
