28. I agree. But it should be other events too. You could have the
TeresaCam, EdwardsCam, etc and webcast to those who sign up and create a buzz on their own. Don't ya think? Get someone, anyone with the campaign and webcam 'em up and send 'em to a bush*/cheney event, not surreptitiously but make them obvious so the bush*heads don't scatter. Let their hatred and divisivness shine for all to see.

Man, I was so afraid that Bush would come out - looking all genial and nice and say "Max, how are you doing? Heard you want to talk to me, come on in out of the sun. It's hot out here ain't it?"

THAT WOULD OF WORKED FOR BUSH.

Now, again he has insulted and divided veterans. Pitting one group against the other and weaseled out of it - just like he did his service in the NG.

Then Max said fine, I'll give it to the SS. Patterson said no. Land Commissioner Seeks Return Of Confederate Plaques
Mon Jan 26, 8:56 PM ET

Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson wants to find a compromise to allow the state to restore plaques commemorating the Confederacy. Those plaques were removed from the Texas Supreme Court building in 2000. The NAACP and others objected to the plaques. The Sons of Confederate Veterans organization has sued to restore the plaques. A judge's ruling could come February fifth. The San Antonio Express-News reports Patterson belongs to the Confederate descendants group, but says he's not actively involved in the lawsuit. Patterson says he wants people to acknowledge what he calls the "real facts" of the Confederacy. He says that includes honoring Robert E. Lee, and he cited a letter in which Lee calls slavery evil. Texas NAACP president Gary Bledsoe called Patterson's advocacy, "divisive."

9.5 Commissioner of the General Land Office

http://www.glo.state.tx.us/landoffice.html
The Land Commissioner, as the head of the General Land Office is known, gains power and significance as a result of the large amount of public land in the state and the resources, particularly energy, that are found on many of these lands. He or she is elected to a four-year term.

The General Land Office administers the use of all state-owned lands. This responsibility includes leasing for gas and oil production, mining, and grazing, and monitoring the environmental quality of public lands and waters. The office also operates the veterans' land program, in which state bonds are used to underwrite loans to military veterans for land purchases.

The Land Commissioner authorizes exploration and exploitation of public lands, so the Commissioner's decisions affect hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity. This also has a significant impact on state government and services, as the General Land Office generates hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties on oil and gas extracted from state lands.

Map: Public lands managed by the General Land Office

Like much of the southern region of the United States, environmental protection, particularly along the coast, has frequently been treated as secondary to generating economic growth. The Land Office has often come under criticism for doing too little to protect coastal areas. Recent years, however, have seen increased efforts to monitor coastlines and respond to water quality problems as they are detected. The implementation of a beach monitoring program coordinated by the Land Office resulted in an improvement in the state's ratings by environmental groups that monitor coastal water quality, though Texas was one of the last states to undertake such efforts <3>.

As with similar offices in other states and at the federal level (for example, the Department of the Interior), the Land Commissioner must reconcile the economic use of natural resources with environmental protection and conservation. State lands are a valuable source of revenue, particularly given that the state cannot draw on an income tax for revenue and that a significant share of oil and gas royalties are dedicated to public education. These issues are particularly acute in the coastal areas, where the state owns four million acres of submerged lands and all of the beaches. The General Land Office is thus under intense pressure both to exploit and preserve public lands, generating equally intense interest in elections.

Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson served as a state senator before being elected in 2002. He succeeded David Dewhurst, who used the office as a platform for his successful campaign to be elected lieutenant governor. Both are Republicans.

29. Here's the letter.
The following letter from nine Senators who are also veterans is being delivered to President Bush today, in Crawford, Texas, where he is (as usual) on vacation:

Dear President Bush:

We, the undersigned members of the United State Senate call on you to specifically condemn the recent attack ads and accompanying campaign which dishonor Senator John Kerry’s combat record in the Vietnam War. These false charges represent the worst kind of politics, and we agree with both Senator John McCain and Senator Kerry that a firmly established service record in the United States Military is fully above reproach. As veterans of the armed services, we ask that you recognize this blatant attempt at character assassination, and publicly condemn it.

Our outrage over these advertisements and tactics has nothing to do with the tax code or campaign finance reform efforts of this nation. Our pain from seeing these slanderous attacks stems from something much more fundamental, that if one veteran’s record is called into question, the service of all American veterans is questioned. This administration must not tacitly comply with unfounded accusations which have suddenly appeared 35 years after the fact, and serve to denigrate the service of a true American patriot. The veterans serving today should never have to expect this kind of treatment, when the wars of their generation have passed into history. We brothers and sisters in arms expect our Commander-in-Chief to stand up and reject this assault upon John Kerry’s honor, the honor of American veterans and that of the United States Navy.

As you yourself have said, there is nothing complicated about supporting our troops. The leader so of this nation should make it clear that the members of our military will not only be supported when they wear the uniform, but also when they return home to the land they fought to defend. Their valor and their wounds, both physical and psychological, make them heroes for as long as they live, a status which should not and must not change simply because they seek to enter public service. We who wore the uniform, served in different branches of the military join together today to defend a fellow veteran from attacks we know to be false, and politically-motivated slander. Such attacks have no place in our democratic process.

Mr. President, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, we believe you owe a special duty to America’s combat veterans when they are under false and scurrilous attacks. We hope you will recognize this duty, and speak out against this group and their efforts to smear the reputation of a man who has served this country nobly.

Call on this group to cease and desist. We can return this campaign season to a discussion of the issues on either side, and restore faith in the political system. As Americans, we should expect nothing less.

Sincerely,

Daniel Inouye
Ernest Hollings
Tom Harkin
Frank Lautenberg
Tom Carper
Jon Corzine

75. Amazing! How far do their tentacles go? It's like Lee Atwater is still
alive....

Wow, when the person who asked about Bob Perry and this dufus answered that Perry had "not asked a thing of him" and yet admitted that Perry had generously donated to his campaigns (for Land Commissioner?) I started laughing....Obviously, they (the Bushites) and Rove quickly had to respond to Cleland....and this dork was the best that they could come up with?

Puhleeze....what a joke....

62. Spouting RNC talking points.
The usual stuff defending the ads, like "Democrats want to selectively choose which 527 ads can and cannot run", and "this group has a right to express their opinion". He got a quick blast fax from Rove, obviously.

68. More lies...
Edited on Wed Aug-25-04 01:14 PM by Dawgs
No one is saying they don't have the right to show these ads. Vets for Kerry and others are asking Bush to codemn these ads. I don't remember anyone ever saying that these Swift Boat Liars don't have a right to say what they want. Typical lies from the righties.

This also shows me that Bush agrees with these ads and supports them... which tells me he supports smearing a decorated war veteran. All this while men and women are dying for Bush's war.

Looks like the plan worked. Show them for what they really are!!!

70. Help...I'm new at this

Does anyone have an 'in' to the Kerry campaign? On every program where the "527" tit for tat stuff comes up, why doesn't the Kerry person frame it like this: The difference between the SVFT smear and a typical 527 issue ad is this - The Kerry Campaign, behind the scenes, puts together a fake entity like SVFT whose only purpose is the LIE and SLANDER Bush. That's the problem and why we don't condemn all 527's. They NEVER make that important distinction. It gets lost in the shuffle.

I could have put this better, but I'm still peeling myself off the ceiling from the glee I felt watching Cleland and Rassman.

77. Nice Quote from Patterson re: Cleland.......
''I tried to accept that letter and he would not give it to me,'' said Patterson. ''He would not face me. He kept rolling away from me. He's quite mobile.''

HE'S QUITE MOBILE!!!!!! WTF. You are a piece of shit, Patterson. Quite rude and pathetic, just like your buddy Bush.
