After the 2000 election, when the true outcome was still very much in question, two men appeared before the court each claiming the other had stolen something precious from him. Only one man was telling the truth. Like angry combatants in an ugly child custody dispute, the two tugged and pulled at the infant’s legs and arms, each seeking to wrest the baby from the other’s grasp. Unable to determine who was in the right, the court concluded that dividing the baby was the only thing to be done.
As the judge prepared to cut the infant in half, one of the men raised an objection. With tears in his eyes, he pleaded with the court to spare the life of the child. He asked the court to give the child to the other rather than harm it.
The other man merely smiled, a strange glint in his eye. “Yes, I demand my share. Give me my half,” he declared. “Divide the child.” Lacking the wisdom of Solomon, the court divided the child and gave both halves to the man.
He in turn nurtured only the butt end mistaking it for the head all the while neglecting the vital organs. The child suffered in agony while the man congratulated himself on his clever strategy.
Four years later, the sad-faced child still struggles to pull itself together.
