Looking for comments on my LTTE
Haven't had much luck with the Orlando Slantinel, but you never know...

Animal House?
I'm sorry Mr Schlesinger, but Animal House was a movie. The torture in Abu Ghraib was an affront to humanity. Of course, James Schlesinger was Secretary of Defense under Richard Nixon, and was hired by Donald Rumsfeld to conduct the Abu Ghraib investigation. Naturally, any report coming out of this investigation is going to minimize the significance of events, and find as little responsibility as possible amongst those who should be held most responsible.
We know that what was occurring in Abu Ghraib went well beyond "frat hazing", involving sodomy, rape, and torture of men and women, adults and children. Children. The number of incidents indicates that more than a "few bad apples" were involved. The methods and procedures described in official reports are professional in nature, originating with civilian intelligence agents. Even so, military tradition dictates that the commanding officer is responsible for the actions of his or her subordinates.
As Robert Dole, a very popular Republican senator, once said, "Where is the outrage?" Only when our leaders display the levels of outrage that these incidents of torture should compel will the American people stand up and say enough, and justice be done. So I wonder what it says about our leadership when there is no outrage.

2. Darned good
I hope it's printed.

When you do a follow-up, there will be a lot of noise and commotion that the investigating committee didn't find any criminal wrongdoing. Be sure to mention that finding criminal fault was not the committee's job, but now that their investigation is in the hands of the authorities who can bring criminal charges, it's time for the Bush administration to step up and begin prosecutions, let the chips fall where they may.

These actions disgrace all of humanity, not just the military, not just Americans. But it sickens me no end that my tax dollars paid for these atrocities to be committed in my name. I demand a full criminal investigation, and if the Bush administration isn't up to the task of examining its own actions, then The Hague and the International Criminal Court needs to step in.

3. Great job!
I like that a lot. You are expressing the outrage that the majority of the public feels. I think your letter will encourage others to pick up the pen. It takes a brave person to tell the truth as you have here. Thank you.
