Ready for the next aggressive war? IRAN before November

Published on Thursday, August 26, 2004 by the International Herald Tribune

An 'October Surprise'? Neocons have Iran in their Sights

by William Pfaff

"...There has been much speculation about an October surprise this year. The American public, however, has grown cynical about terrorist scares and would need a pretty convincing one to overcome the skepticism provoked by the Bush administration's past exploitations of the terrorism risk, notably around the Democratic National Convention.

What about something that increases the violence in the Middle East? It is hard to imagine that the administration wants more trouble in the region since it is far from mastering the Iraq insurrection.

But one theory says that making the war bigger would make it better for U.S. forces, since what is going on now is "the wrong kind of war." The U.S. has troops and tools for "real" wars, the kinds it wins, and should move on from today's disastrous affair of suicide bombers and kids with rocket-launchers.

The temperature has been rising between Washington and Iran over the latter's alleged efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Some former U.S. officials concerned with Middle Eastern policy suggest that when President George W. Bush must eventually explain what has gone wrong in Iraq, it might be convenient to blame Iran. Bush could accuse Iran of fostering the Islamic extremism responsible for U.S. frustration in Najaf and elsewhere, and of encouraging Shiite resistance to the occupation force and the new Iraq government the United States is trying to install. Blaming Iran would be a step up the escalation ladder.

2. The RNC convention is going to be a bust...
...and Iraq isn't going to help Bush* in November. That leaves Bush* with a few million fanatics and zealots as a voter base. He needs to scare the shit out of the American public and push the 'patriots' to vote for him. Another terrorist attack? Or escalation of the 'war on terrorism'?

- Bush* has a free ride from both parties when it comes to Iraq. Both now accept that Iraq is part of that war on terrorism...even though no one has made a connection. What's to stop Bush* from faking another threat and bombing Iran? Would Democrats object?

3. When I read this crap, I get filled with the same rage, hopelessness
and loathing that I experienced in the summer of 2002 when Cheney and Co started the rumblings at Iraq.

Its not a good feeling - that "what an illogical thought - not even Bush and Friends are crazy enough to do that" feeling. And you know in the pit of your stomach that is exactly what is going to happen...

4. I believe that. Bush has said you don't change presidents during a war.
The one he has going has gone stale. Nothing like a new and fresh war to encourage blind support. This is the amoral type of thing Bush and his croanies would do. Fits right into their Machivellian way of thinking. I sure hope it is wrong though. Enough bloodshed has occured as a result of these criminals in office.

7. A fresh war and all according to PNAC plans...
...so Bush* would please a lot of people by bombing another country and distracting attention away from quagmire Iraq. There are others on the list...but Iran would be the most likely because it's close to the bases they're building in Iraq (for just that purpose).

- Expect the Bushies to start building up the rhetoric in mid Sept or Oct and then launch an attack from 30 thousand feet.

8. I have to admit I was suspicious of that story about the 16 yo girl
that was hanged for being immoral. It makes me think that they have started the leaking of horrendous stories that will incite the public to support yet another war.

5. Imperial Hubris personified.

Iran would be like opening up a big can of hell on earth, and pouring it all over America.

Our only allies in the Islamic world are hanging on by a thread. When Musharref, the Sauds, and Kuwaitis go down in fire and sword, and we are facing most of the Islamic world, what exactly will Rummy suggest we do then? three words -- Low Yield Nukes.

11. Hell on earth his exactly what Bush wants...
For the longest time, I've had gut feeling that Bush and his handlers feel that the "end times" of the Apocalypse are near, and that it is his sacred privilege to cause world war three, which will bring about the Rapture, and start God's Kingdom on earth....

Remember James G. Watt, Secretary of the Interior under Reagan? He once stated, "I don't know how many future generations we can count on until the Lord returns(which meant that raping our natural parks was doing God's work, since someone should benefit in the time left from God's gifts, and it might as well be big business....)

Bush has stated that he's unconcerned over how the history books will write about him, since after him there will be no history...

These theological pin-heads want world wide pain and suffering...

9. a war in Iran would be a disaster
Iran is a large, mountainous country, which has never been successfully conquered by the sword. (The Arabs did "conquer" it in the 8th century, but only through the spread of Islam). It would be a huge, HUGE mistake for the U.S. to try and invade that country.

Then again, that pretty much describes Bush's foreign policy for the last 4 years...
